The railway did not have a desired route, emphasizes Dieter Müller, project manager (left), here in conversation with Andreas Brandmaier, co-inventor of the "citizen route".

There were five route suggestions to choose from.

It turned out to be “Limone” – twice.

Why did Deutsche Bahn decide so clearly against "turquoise"?

District

- A 20-meter-high wall through the middle of the village fears the citizens' initiative "Protects Aßling and the Atteltal" among other things - "It won't happen like that," says the "Bürgerinitiative Brennernordzulauf Ebersberg district".

The proponents of the Bürgertrasse (turquoise) emphasize that when the route runs through Aßling, the station will finally be renovated.

"He will anyway," counters the Aßling citizens' initiative.

External experts also speak out in favor of “Limone”.

There are many points on which the two initiatives contradict each other.

For some of them, the "Limone" opponents have accused the railways of not having properly considered them in their plans.

The railway looked at the points and evaluated them again with the help of external experts – again in favor of Limone.

"There is no change in the overall view either," explains Dieter Müller, project manager for the railway and responsible for the section of the route that is causing such a stir in the district.

"Limone has the best cost-effectiveness ratio." Limone was selected using an evaluation method whose criteria were defined before the start of planning, so that the criteria could not be influenced during the planning phase, but rather an objective assessment was possible, says Müller .

"Especially in terms of noise and vibration, turquoise simply did worse."

Calculations using the “stress test method”

For all five variants, the noise propagation and vibration corridors were calculated according to the "stress test" method, the result: In Limone, the area that is exposed to a noise level of more than 49 decibels (volume between a whisper and a quiet conversation) during the day is 1578 hectares .

At night, the levels drop to 28.6 hectares and 45 decibels.

For turquoise, on the other hand, the calculation results in 1694 hectares during the day and 39.5 at night.

And when it comes to shocks, turquoise scores two whole grades worse than lime, even though the difference was slightly smaller compared to the first calculation.

Rail.

“This automatically makes the route quieter”

According to Bahn, a major benefit of Limone is the relocation of freight traffic to the new line: 146 freight trains currently run through Aßling every day.

54 of them between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The new route reduces the number to 28 freight trains a day, of which only ten would be on the road at night.

"This automatically makes the route quieter," explains Müller.

Not only for the Aßlinger, but in general.

Because 202 freight trains are to run on the planned new line every day.

And Limone runs deeper than Turquoise, for which a 30 meter high and 1.6 kilometer long bridge would have to be built in the Atteltal - visible and audible from afar.

Limone, on the other hand, includes a tunnel solution and, by and large, runs further away from settlements, according to Müller.

Therefore it is not a disadvantage of lime,

that Aßling does not get noise protection.

That would only be absolutely necessary with turquoise.

A route through Aßling would also result in restrictions in ongoing traffic: more than three kilometers of the route would have to be rebuilt, and space for four tracks would have to be created in the track area.

But: "We can't build while the wheel is running," notes Müller.

The project planner explains that the construction phases, some of which will last for years, will entail months of route closures and rail replacement services.

Difficult to implement at a commuter station like Aßling.

A house would have to be demolished near Oberelkofen

A house would also have to be demolished directly on the existing route for turquoise near the Landschulheim in Oberelkofen.

"That couldn't be avoided with turquoise, the house would always be affected," emphasizes Müller, adding: "None of the other proposed routes would require demolition."

The railway planner admits that more earth movement is required for Limone than for Turquoise.

"But when I dig a tunnel, I always have more excavation material than with a variant without a tunnel." And finally, the project manager points out, this is a one-off earth movement in order to reach the northern inlet of the Brenner Pass for future generations.

That was decision day.

There are many points that have to be considered: health, environment - everything has been explicitly considered.

"New infrastructure always triggers concern," emphasizes Müller understanding for the residents of the route.

That's why the planners wouldn't decide, but the list of criteria.

All five proposals were feasible, realizable and approvable.

The railway did not have a desired route, emphasizes Müller, the planners would have been satisfied with every result - it just had to be legally secure and the result comprehensible.

The project manager sums up the position: "We were looking for the most compatible solution, and that is Limone."
