The decision was made in accordance with the cabinet's policy regarding the retention of bodies for the purpose of repatriating the captives and the missing. In addition, the outgoing Minister of Defense rejected the claims that Israel is involved in the death of Nasser Abu Hamid, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in terrorist acts

Outgoing Defense Minister Benny Gantz decided today (Wednesday) not to release for burial the body of the terrorist Nasser Abu Hamid, one of the founders of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, who died yesterday in prison.

The decision was made after the recommendation of the security officials and in accordance with the cabinet's decision regarding the retention of bodies for the purpose of repatriating the captives and the missing.

In addition, Gantz rejected the claims implicating Israel's involvement in his death.

In a cabinet decision brought by the Minister of Defense two years ago, it was decided to expand the possession of the bodies of terrorists who were involved in murder, wounding a person, and possession of weapons, even if they have no organizational affiliation to Hamas.

There are exceptions to this rule, according to the considerations of the security officials and the decision of the Minister of Defense.

Yesterday it was reported in the Palestinian media that the terrorist died yesterday at the Shamir Assaf Harofeh hospital in Beer Ya'akov, after Israel recently refused to release him despite his terminal condition.

He suffered from lung cancer in recent years and recently his condition deteriorated.

The Palestinians, for their part, blame Israel for his death, and claimed that there is a "policy of medical neglect" in the prisons.

The 51-year-old prisoner from Ramallah was banned after being sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, security offenses and attempted murder.

Abu Hamid is considered the right-hand man of the leader of the Tanzim in the West Bank, Marwan Barghouti.

He was accused of 13 terrorist incidents, including involvement in the murder of Binyamin Zeev Kahane and his wife, in the planting of an explosive device in the "Bianchini" cafe in Jerusalem, in the murder of city resident Gad Rajoan, and involvement in the attack on the "Sea Food Market" restaurant in Tel Aviv.

Abu Hamid's mother has five other sons who are imprisoned in Israel and their sentence reaches a total of 110 years.

Seven members of the Kahana family were injured in an attack near the settlement of Ofra that occurred in 2001. The Israeli car was hit by fire from an ambush about 1 km south of the settlement of Ofra, the shooting was carried out from the village near the Ein Yabrod road. Following the shooting, the father lost control of the car and it overturned. The vehicle fell into an abyss. Benjamin Zeev and his wife Talia were killed, the five children, ages 2 months to 10, were injured. One girl, 4 and a half years old, was seriously injured, another daughter was moderately injured and the other three girls were slightly injured, including the baby who was 2 months old at the time.
