Do you want to continue Guillermo Lasso at the helm of Ecuador in 2025?

"I think it is almost an unavoidable obligation," the president responded in an interview with Directo USA, recalling that the country's Constitution allows for re-election and that it is necessary to "work politically" so that he can continue the political project he leads.

"If we want to continue serving Ecuadorians to promote projects that allow us to generate prosperity in Ecuador, well, we also have to work politically to continue with this project. It is legitimate," the president replied when expressly asked about the possibility of seeking a second term in the elections scheduled for 2025.

In his interview with Juan Carlos López, Lasso also recounted details of his meeting with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, during his trip to Washington.

Lasso traveled to the United States on Sunday, where, in addition to the meeting with Biden, he had a full agenda of meetings with representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

The Ecuadorian president revealed details of his meeting with Biden, who emphasized to him during the dialogue that the United States is "a country of migration."

The Latin American president proposed to the United States "two tools" to deal with the flow of migrants to the northern country, which also imply a joint fight against drug trafficking.

The first tool, he said, is a trade agreement.

"If we export more, there is more employment in Ecuador and therefore less migratory flow to the United States," explained Lasso.

(Lasso stated before his arrival in the United States that Ecuador is the only country in Latin America that does not have a Free Trade Agreement with the United States, a priority issue in his visit).

In terms of security, he said that the work "at the end of the day is a cooperation, it is not simply a country like Ecuador that tells the United States 'help me."

"In the fight against drug trafficking we protect our children and our young people, but we also protect the children and young people of the United States and Europe. Therefore it is fair to share the bill and the cost of a confrontation that occurs in our territory but also protects the youth and children of the United States," he argued.
