BRUSSELS, DEC 21 -
Qatargate "is dramatic and harmful to the credibility of the European Union".
This is what the president of the EU Council, Charles Michel, underlined in an interview with Politico.eu.
"First of all, we must draw lessons from this story and draw up a package of measures to avoid such things, to prevent corruption in the future", explained Michel, underlining however how "the scandal" makes it even more difficult for us to focus on the economic and energy crises that have an impact on the lives of European citizens right now".
During the interview, the president of the EU Council therefore emphasized two of the main challenges that await Europe in the coming months, starting with
the distorting effects of the US Inflation Reduction Act.
If Europe is not able to give an adequate response in the coming weeks, it risks the "fragmentation of the single market", underlined the former Belgian prime minister.
The other big problem that Europe has to face - he added
- is "the excessive dependence on China and the pressure that China exerts on us".
