Duke Newcomb Forever Trailer E3 2001 (3dRealms)

During the last year, a forgotten piece of history in the gaming industry was released to the network: the game (Build) version of Duke Newcom Forever, as revealed in the trailer during E3 2001 (you can see the trailer in the attached player. Trust me, at the time, this game seemed revolutionary).

That version that was leaked online contained the source files, but it was not finished and was not considered a "real" game.

But it certainly contained enough content for a group of online modders to try to put all the pieces together and release the project that never saw the light of day.

Quick history

We wrote about the leaked version and its reliability before, but we will remind all those who don't remember or don't know what it is: Duke Newcam Forever, the fourth title in the series of immortal shooting games from the nineties, was announced somewhere in 1997, but it entered development hell where it passed from developer to developer for 14 years - until it was finally released in 2011 by Gearbox.

The end result we all remember as what is considered one of the industry's biggest disappointments ever.

Between all the different incarnations of this game and its development process that took forever (get it?), somewhere in 2001 a trailer was released during the annual E3 conference that showed the new Duke Newcom in all its glory in full 3D.

At the time, this trailer was considered revolutionary and groundbreaking, and the hype around it was insane.

It featured full interactions with the environment, brutal action and an ambitious gaming experience that we had never encountered at that time.

Then, to everyone's surprise, this version, buried over the years, leaked onto the Reddit forums last May.

Even

George Broussard

, one of the original creators of Duke Newcom, was surprised and did not understand where it suddenly appeared, but he confirmed that it was the real thing.

But Broussard suggested tempering expectations because "it's not a full game but a collection of test stages populated by characters."

And despite this statement, this version proved one thing: this version of the game was in relatively advanced stages of development.

You can see that a lot of mechanics work as they should, including a fully functional battle system.

This means that the weapons and their various effects function properly, and in the rhythms of the game you can find quite a few characters, stages, dubbing clips and prepared scenes.

Everything was indeed ready for a display for the trailer itself, but the materials were there.

This is where the Mighty Foot Productions group comes in, which is responsible for the "Duke Newcom Forever 2001 Restoration" project, which tries to reassemble all the pieces of the puzzle, and give us the game we never got.

The group of modders managed to restore and complete using the Enril 1 and 2 engine and the source files leaked last year some of the essential gameplay moments that were revealed in the original trailer, and make them playable for the first time.

So where do you download?

Of course, this is not a full game or a coherent and full gaming experience, and the players choose each of the proposed stages separately.

But everything revealed in the original trailer is here - Las Vegas, the hotel scene, and even Duke and the motorcycle.

The game is available for download (by clicking here) for PC players, and since it is a game from 2001 you will not need a new computer to run it.

There are several different configuration settings, and even a multiplayer mode.

For anyone who grew up in that era and ever hoped to lay their hands on a Duke Newcom Forever in this version, your childhood dream has come true.

Now we just need Valve to release Half Life 3 for virtual reality.

After Huff Life Alex, and after Duke Newcom came out of nowhere despite all the years that have passed - anything is possible.
