Changes in the legislation make it possible to obtain German or Austrian citizenship for tens of thousands of Israelis who until now were not entitled to it

There is no question about the importance of the foreign passports, primarily those of the strongest European economies - Germany and Austria, who are entitled to them get access to countless benefits in Europe as a whole - from free or heavily discounted higher education, freedom of movement, the right to work legally throughout the European Union to easy access to financing and construction business

The reasons are clear.

Recently, new laws were enacted in both countries that open up the possibility of citizenship to tens of thousands more Israelis who until now were not on the eligible list.

The demand, naturally, has led to a confusing supply of service providers who promise that with them the process will go smoothly and end with a passport, but the reality looks a little different.

"The new business opportunity has led to the emergence of a lot of unprofessional parties, to say the least," warns attorney Nir Lanker, owner and partner of the Lanker-Yardani law firm, an expert in assisting with the process of issuing German or Austrian citizenship, from the Electra City tower in Tel Aviv.

"The doors may have been opened, but there are still a lot of refusals, so it is important to do the process only with someone who really knows the field and has extensive proven experience."

How do we know who to choose to accompany the process?

Here are Attorney Lanker's important tips.

Visit the website of the German Embassy in Tel Aviv.

How do we know how to choose one of a huge number of lawyers? Do you want to get the most reliable recommendation? It is just a click away - on the website of the German Embassy in Tel Aviv. You will find a list on the embassy's website of law firms recommended by none other than the German Embassy itself. The lawyers who specialize in German law appear in it. "Our firm - Lanker-Yordani Attorney and Notary Office, is of course on the prestigious list."

They chose a German-speaking attorney

This is a critical point - "A lawyer who speaks German should be chosen rather than ignorant. A lawyer who does not know the German language and uses translators/clerks will do a worse job and often even harmful, since the subtleties of the language are what help in the correct and accurate submission of the request. Insist on this section , and check it before you decide to close a deal. It is absolutely impossible to deal with the laws of the countries of Germany and Austria without the lawyer knowing the German language, certainly not to specialize in it.

Check the website of the Bar Association

Another reliable source for obtaining information about a lawyer to accompany the process is the Bar Association. On the Bar Association website you will find an independent list of lawyers who are experts in the laws of different countries, including Germany and Austria.

Did you choose a lawyer who does not appear on the list?

Know that he is not an expert in the laws of the country where you are applying for citizenship.

Choose a lawyer who deals only in the relevant countries

If you are seeking naturalization in Germany or Austria, choose a lawyer who specializes in these countries only.

This is true for any country where you will apply for citizenship.

A serious lawyer will specialize in a country or a group of countries with a clear historical, verbal and legal connection between them.

Each country or group of countries has its own set of individual laws, which have no relation to other countries.

As soon as a lawyer starts to "scatter" across unrelated countries, a big question mark hangs over everything concerning his professionalism.

There is no connection between Germany, Portugal, Poland and the Czech Republic, and as much as a lawyer's office claims to be an "expert" in a greater number of countries that are not related to each other, this is exactly the sign not to use its services.

Choose a lawyer who is a member of relevant bodies

Another way to know that the chosen lawyer is an expert on the subject, is to make sure that that lawyer is a member of relevant bodies, for example like attorney Nir Lanker, who is a member of bodies such as the Germany-Austria-Israel Committee of the Bar Association as well as the Israel-Germany Jurists Association, which includes lawyers Those who regularly deal with legal issues related to the relationship between Israel and German-speaking countries.

Look for reliable recommendations

and have you made sure that the lawyer is on the important lists? Now look for a recommendation from clients. If you do not know any clients who can make a recommendation, search on "Google My Business" (GMB), where you will find real recommendations and reliability from that lawyer's clients. Note that even if the lawyer is highly rated, it is important to make sure that he has a large number of reviews, at least dozens, since the rating is an average of all the ratings. In the open recommendations, read a few of them and make sure that a recommendation about regularization of citizenship appears in them German or Austrian citizenship and not just general recommendations.

Choose a lawyer and not a limited company

The issue of foreign citizenships has become a real industry, as a result of which companies of various sizes have sprung up that guarantee the best care.

Don't let this confuse you - hire the services of a law firm and not a limited company.

An attorney cannot incorporate as a limited company due to his personal professional responsibility.

On the other hand, limited liability companies that provide citizenship services have no such responsibility and may change owners or close down and disappear.

A long, complicated and sensitive process like obtaining foreign citizenship requires personal responsibility and close supervision until its successful end. There have already been unfortunate cases where limited liability companies who offered to regulate foreign citizenships were closed and their clients' money went down the drain.

A company that offers "citizenship services" is a temporary "trend" company, based only on the fact that there are temporary changes in legislation in foreign countries and at the end of the day it must close/disappear.

A law firm deals with a wide variety of legal issues and is not exposed to these changes.

Don't look for deals

As in any field, in this field too there will be those who will offer discounted prices in order to attract customers.

It is important to understand: issuing a passport is not like buying a shirt, and this is not the place to look for a cheap price.

Cheap treatment means unprofessional treatment, or sometimes partial treatment and the result is often the disruption of the process and refusal of the request.

Fixing the problem in such a case would cost much more than if the same customer had paid a professional lawyer in the first place and of course the process would be much longer.

Are you also included among the new beneficiaries?

It is important to know that many Israelis who were not included in the list of those eligible for German citizenship or Austrian citizenship, and even those who tried their luck and were rejected, may now be eligible following legislative changes in Germany and Austria.

Both countries recognized their historical responsibility towards Jews who were forced to flee their territories due to the rise of the Nazis to power, and they now allow more flexible conditions for their descendants to re-naturalize.

If you are not sure if you are included among the potential beneficiaries, you should check with a lawyer who is an expert in the field.

Thousands of Israelis have already been naturalized.
