This is not a plot from a Spanish telenovela or a Turkish series: for 17 years a Chinese woman believed that her son died shortly after birth and discovered to her astonishment that her relatives had lied to her, kidnapped him and raised him themselves.

Furthermore, now that she knows the truth and wants to be reunited with her son - the "adopting" family is suing her for all the money she spent raising him.

Zhang Kaihong, a grieving mother who was tricked into believing that her infant son was dead, discovered that he had been kidnapped by her cousin's wife's sister nearly two decades ago.

A resident of Jiangsu Province in China moved to live at her aunt's house when she was heavily pregnant with her son because at the time, according to local media reports, she was afraid that her ex-husband and his family would harm her.

She gave birth to her son in their home and then the sister of her cousin's wife informed her that the newborn was born paralyzed in both legs.

Eventually, the relative convinced Zhang that her baby had frozen to death.

Almost two decades have passed since the traumatic event, and Zhang learned by chance that his son was not dead.

She started looking for him and eventually managed to locate him.

Zhang ordered a DNA test for the boy and the results confirmed that he was indeed her lost son.

She then discovered that her cousin's wife's sister had become her son's "adoptive" mother.

The boy is currently attending high school in the same district, the South China Morning Post reported.

Although Zhang and her son decided they wanted to reunite, move in together and bridge the gap, the boy's "adoptive" mother and her husband filed a lawsuit against Zhang this month.

According to the reports, the "adoptive" parents want Zhang to pay them back their money for raising her son

Zhang doesn't plan to give in to their demands, with the justified argument that she never gave him up for adoption - but that he was taken from her without her knowledge.

The mother hopes that all those involved will be punished for their actions.

The Chinese media mentioned a similar case that happened in 2018, when a resident of China was reunited with her son 26 years after the nanny she hired for him kidnapped him to raise him as her son.
