Has been busy putting his hand on the trees: Michael Lechner, city councilor and former chairman of the Holzkirchen forest owners' association, is convinced of the quality of the wood felled for Thomas Day.

Only today, then it's done.
After December 21st, the so-called Thomas Day, the days get longer again.
But there is another special reason for the shortest day of the year and before that the longest night: This is traditionally the time when the best wood is felled.
We asked forest farmer Michael Lechner, city councilor from Miesbach and former chairman of the Holzkirchen forest owners' association, why this is the case.
Mr. Lechner, the best wood is felled on Thomas Day and Thomas Night. Is that correct?
Yes, this is the best time to cut wood for building and high quality work.
Because it is the shortest day of the year and the juice percentage has then reached its lowest level.
The tree is completely still.
This also applies to the wood, which cracks the least as a result.
But that's not the only reason why now is the ideal time for making wood.
Which one is there?
We also have a waning moon, which supports this process.
We also had frost.
It makes the ground hard.
This prevents major damage from transporting the logs.
So ideal conditions. Did you use it yourself?
Why, surely.
I finished the wood on Tuesday when the ground started to soften again.
We made 26 trees, that's about 50 to 60 cubic meters.
I was very active for a retiree (laughs).
Would it have been worthwhile to use Thomasnacht as well?
I think that's getting too special.
There are other rules that you should follow.
For example, cutting the tree towards the valley, also because of the sap.
And the signs of the day could also be observed.
But that's where it gets a bit esoteric.

Is there a special market for this special wood?
There are companies in Austria that have specialized in this Thomas wood.
The wood is then paid better, but of course that has to be right.
I find that far too few pay attention to such cheap lottery days these days.
Can the special quality of the wood be proven?
The old farmers demonstrably paid attention to this when it came to building a roof truss, a threshing floor or a shed.
This was also shown when a new building had to be built quickly after a fire in the summer: the wood is then not as stable as that from the winter.
But in our bulk timber market, this particular winter timber accounts for perhaps one percent of the volume.
That's just a small niche.
