Ukrainian President Zelensky announces his request to join NATO (Reuters)
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to arrive in Washington today (Wednesday) for a meeting with the President of the United States Joe Biden and a visit to Congress.
This is Zelensky's first official departure from Ukraine since Russia's invasion of the country.
Zelensky's visit comes in the background of Biden's statement that he intends to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, for protection against heavy Russian bombing.
Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi did not respond to reports about Zansky's expected visit, only saying that on Wednesday the American Congress is expected to "focus especially on the issue of democracy".

Yesterday, the Ukrainian president paid a surprise visit to the soldiers in the eastern city of Akhmat, which is on the front line of the war, and presented medals to the soldiers - that's what a video published in his office showed.
During his visit, Zelensky emphasized Russia's "stammering but persistent attempts" to conquer Ukraine.
"Please support our Bakhmut - tattered but not conquered - and its defenders," said Zelensky.
The President of Ukraine also wrote in a message on the Telegram social network that "the East is holding on because Ahmet is fighting. In fierce battles and at the cost of many lives, freedom is protected here for all of us."
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented medals yesterday in the Kremlin to the commanders in charge of the four regions that Russia claims to have annexed from Ukraine.
