Holzkirchen's new master market builder explains in an interview what she focuses on in her work
Holzkirchen – Seven months after Florens Hintler gave up his job as market builder (we reported), the municipality of Holzkirchen has found a successor: the architect Karolina Holzbach.
The 39-year-old grew up in Moosburg an der Isar in the Freising district, studied at Munich University of Applied Sciences and most recently worked for Lang Hugger Rampp Architects in Munich.
The office specializes in resource-saving construction, and Holzbach also wants to focus on sustainability as a market builder, as she explains in the interview.
Ms. Holzbach, you have been market builder since the beginning of November. How were your first few weeks?
I was given a very warm welcome, my colleagues are all very helpful.
At the beginning it is important for me to get to know the team, the work processes and the current projects.
This has been the focus of the past few weeks.
The lack of affordable housing is a big issue in Holzkirchen. Did you find an apartment right away?
I have been living in Holzkirchen with my family for five years.
We were lucky back then and found something.
But affordable housing is an important issue to consider.
Your predecessor Florens Hintler shaped the face of Holzkirchen. How big are the footsteps you are following?
The projects and concepts initiated by Mr. Hintler - among other things on local development and mobility - form the framework for the future spatial and structural overall development of Holzkirchen.
Of course I will continue these projects.
But I would also like to contribute and implement my own ideas and visions.
As a citizen of Holzkirchen, I have been able to take an “outside look” at local development over the past five years.
Now I have the opportunity to actively contribute to the further development of the place.
I find that very exciting, but of course it is also a great challenge.
I also think it's important that each individual in the building authority team or the administration contributes to the development of Holzkirchen.
I am sure that together we will succeed
What will you focus on in your work?
After almost a month, I still can't define the exact focus.
In any case, the sustainability and future viability of the projects are very important to me.
This means that ecological construction methods will be prioritized in future community building projects by creating an ecological catalog of criteria.

My space
Which projects do you want to continue?
There are already many good concepts and projects in the Holzkirchen market.
For example, to improve the attractiveness of Münchner Strasse, to design the train station or the market square as the heart of the community.
We will now implement this step by step.
Affordable housing is another important point.
Not to be forgotten is the further development of the surrounding districts.
As a street village, Holzkirchen is not an easy place for designers. How can the quality of stay be improved?
I spontaneously think of a kind of green line, so that a new spatial effect is created and the townscape is enlivened.
In addition, the street should no longer only fulfill a functional task, but must reshape the image of the place as an open space.
Even with small measures, the environment can give a completely new impression.
I would like to show this and thus contribute to an improved quality of stay.
What do you mean by "green line"?
This means bringing more greenery into the streets of the community.
A concept has already been commissioned for the possibilities, but this is not yet available.
You have previously worked in architectural offices. As a creative person, how do you find your way around in public administration?
The processes of an administration are very different from those in a classic architect's office.
My tasks there were in the organizational, creative and primarily in the planning area.
However, I think that because of my flexibility and my openness to new things, I can quickly find my way around and adapt to new tasks.
What particularly appeals to you about your new job as market builder in Holzkirchen?
The tasks of the market builder are incredibly diverse, which is extremely stimulating.
I would also like to play an active role in shaping the market community.
The sensitive handling of the construction and design quality and the further development of the place are particularly important to me.
