A prison guard in Grasse was rushed to hospital on Wednesday afternoon after being violently attacked by an inmate,

Hervé Segaud, national FO delegate for prison guards , told

Le Figaro , confirming information from

Nice .

Morning

.

The facts occurred around 1 p.m., just after the change of supervisors, during a staff check.

If usually the opening of a cell is carried out by a single agent, a two-person opening protocol had been specifically requested that day for the inmate in question, a 23-year-old man from Cannes with a long criminal record, known for his aggressiveness in prison.

“An experienced supervisor in his fifties came to the cell, accompanied by a young trainee.

The detainee asked to go to the infirmary, which was refused as he had no valid reason.

He immediately flew into a rage, hitting the supervisor in the face when the door opened,”

explains Hervé Segaud.

Stunned by the violence of the blow, the prison officer collapsed on the ground, half conscious.

In a movement of uncontrollable rage, the prisoner then threw himself on him, striking him a series of punches in the face.

Destitute and unable to manage the aggressor alone, the young trainee immediately gave the alert and the first reinforcements quickly arrived on the spot.

While trying to stop the individual who continued to attack the victim, a senior officer also received a blow.

The 23-year-old was finally overpowered and taken to a punishment cell.

He should have been gone a long time ago

"The supervisor was lying on the ground in a pool of blood

," said the trade unionist.

Found unconscious, he was first taken care of by the local care unit before being rushed to hospital.

The latter, who suffers from several fractures in particular at the level of an arcade, was able to return to his home in the evening.

Reputed to be violent, unpredictable and psychologically unstable, the defendant had been released from solitary confinement a few days earlier after assaulting another guard.

On the morning of the incident, he also tried to set fire to his cell.

The FO penitentiary union is sorry for this violent attack and wonders about the presence of the young man at the Grasse remand center.

He had already committed similar acts here.

We immediately asked that he be transferred elsewhere, as is normal practice.

I don't understand why this hasn't been done.

He should have been gone a long time ago

, ”points out Hervé Segaud.
