"Hanni's Ice Fairy Tale" has been running on Penzberg's town square since the beginning of December - for the first time on a plastic track and only with a few large events to protect residents from noise pollution.

What do the skaters think?

And what does the city say?

A mid-term review shortly before the holidays.

Penzberg – The synthetic rink, on which large and small skaters have been able to skate daily since December 3, is around 600 square meters in size.

After two years of being forced to take a break due to the pandemic, many are taking up this offer - but so far there have been fewer runners than in the last ice fairy tale in 2019/2020.

As Monika Engel from the city informed when asked, there were 4479 runners on the deadline of Monday, December 19th.

In 2019/2020 there were already 5707 in the same period, according to Engel.

A total of 17,366 runners visited the "Ice Fairy Tale" in 2019/2020.

Mid-term balance: Fewer skaters than 2019

The fact that fewer skaters have been skating on the synthetic rink than on natural ice three years ago is not surprising in the town hall, says Engel.

"From the number of visitors, we expected that it would be less important." Because even before the start of the "Ice Fairy Tale", numerous critical voices were raised about the new plastic track.

Trying out something new is never easy, says the town hall employee.

Criticism of plastic track: "You need more power"

If you ask around the ice skaters around the rink, the plastic rink doesn't seem to go down too well with users.

“A normal ice rink is much better.

You don't slip to the side like that," says 14-year-old Emre.

The young Penzberger discovered that you can also go faster on a natural ice rink.

He therefore wishes for natural ice again for the next “Ice Fairy Tale”.

Daniel also likes natural ice better.

"It's just a different feeling," said the 21-year-old from Penzberger.

However, he noticed positively that there are fewer holes in the surface of the synthetic track than with natural ice.

"It's a bit different and you need more strength," sums up Franziska after the first laps on the plastic track.

But once you get used to it, you can drive quite well on it.

In addition, the noise level emitted by the drivers is lower, she finds.

The fact that the "Ice Fairy Tale" is less loud this year than in previous years is not only due to the new plastic track, which, according to City Hall employee Engel, actually seems to be quieter than natural ice.

But also because, due to the protests from local residents (we reported), loud events are avoided, except for one DJ evening.

Instead, so-called silent discos (quiet discos) were held with headphones.

Band made of plastic instead of wood - that makes less noise

At the same time, visitors to the "Ice Fairy Tale" would prefer louder music, says Engel.

This was shown by conversations with ice skaters.

Engel does not want to comment on what the residents say.

Silence was agreed within the town hall;

so you don't make any statements.

Only so much: With the lawyer of the residents one is in conversation.

Thanks to the new plastic barrier, noise can also be avoided, according to Engel.

If the runners bounce against it, they made less noise than with the previous wooden gang.

"The plastic track is not that bad"

"Ice is better, but the synthetic track isn't that bad either."

Or: "Slower and more strenuous": That, says Engel, is the feedback she often hears from skaters when she asks about their experience of running on the new synthetic track.

Some may be bothered by the "slower".

But for the children of the skating courses, the track offers better conditions for beginners than natural ice.

The responsible coach, the former ice hockey professional Christian Curth, gave her this feedback, according to Engel.

The newly offered grinding service for the runners has been well received, she says.

She couldn't say whether that's because the plastic dulls the runners more quickly, or because many ice skates have simply started to rust after two years of Corona, which first has to be removed.

No decision has yet been made as to whether there will be a natural ice rink or a synthetic rink again for the next “Ice Fairy Tale”.

According to Engel, this will only be discussed after the event.
