Jean-Yves Camus: "The RN has nothing to lose politically by asking for the dissolution of far-right groups"

INTERVIEW – In a letter, Marine Le Pen asked Elisabeth Borne to “dissolve” the “extremist groups”, “whatever their political profile”. For the researcher associated with the Iris Jean-Yves Camus, by targeting in particular the ultra-right, the RN is continuing its strategy of standardization.

Associate researcher at Iris, Jean-Yves Camus directs the Observatory of Political Radicalities of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation (think-tank).

LE FIGARO.

- In a letter sent on December 18 to the Prime Minister, Marine Le Pen calls for the dissolution of "extremist groups", from right and left.

How to interpret this strategy?

Jean-Yves Camus.

-

This strategy responds to the request for the creation of a parliamentary commission of inquiry into far-right groups, recently formulated by certain Nupe deputies.

Marine Le Pen says, in hollow, that it is not a question of investigating, as the deputies have already done in 2019, but of acting, which is the responsibility of the government.

And not only against the extreme right as part of the Nupes would like: against all political radicalism which may be within the scope of application of article L.212-1 of the Internal Security Code either, to make short: the ultra-left, the ultra-right and radical Islam, when they use violence, want to overthrow institutions or incite hatred and discrimination on the basis of gender, sexual orientation,

of ethnic or religious affiliation.

This is what the government has been doing since 2017, since it has dissolved 15 radical Islamist associations;

5 belonging to the extreme or the ultra-right and 2 belonging to the ultra left, one of which obtained the suspension of the measure by the administrative justice.

So why ask him to act?

On the one hand to try to draw, in public opinion, a clear dividing line between the RN and the far right.

On the other hand, to accredit the idea that if we track down extremism, we should not focus on the extreme right, which the media and the left talk about a lot, but do even more against radical Islam and much more against the far left.

Pointing the finger at far-right groups, is this the culmination of the RN's de-demonization strategy?

The skill of MLP consists in not pointing the finger at the far right and it alone: its activists and many of its voters would not understand it.

She also asks, implicitly, the minister to act against the far left and radical anti-fascists, which is a fairly popular theme among the militant base of the RN.

But it's true, her request is a step in the process of normalization that she is making her party follow.

And the RN like herself, personally, being vilified since 2011, with growing acrimony, by all those on their right, she probably rightly thinks that losing the votes of ultra activists is very little in the look at what really matters to him: winning votes that consolidate the vote of the “popular bloc” for 2027.

It is also a way of inviting its competitor, Reconquête, to take the same distance or to pass for the logical base of the radicals.

Jean-Yves Camus

Politically, what does it have to gain or lose?

These groups don't represent much...

The Ministry of the Interior estimates the number of ultra-right activists at 3,500.

Even adding the most radical fringe of RN activists who have not gone to splits like the Party of France, the possible loss of votes is minimal, it does not move a ballot.

The electoral loss is nil and the image gain is strong.

MLP is not asking for the banning of far-right groups because they represent the world, but to show that his party belongs to an ideological family that is radically, it is the case to say, different from the two that the common trunk which existed from the birth of the FN in 1972 until its arrival in 2011, is definitely cut.

It is also a way of inviting its competitor, Reconquête,

Can the RN thus hope to cut the rug out from under LREM or movements like the Republican Spring for which “the extremes of the left and the right

“ come

together”?

Laurent Bouvet, who died too soon, did not say exactly that.

He had invented the concept of

"identity pincers"

to describe the situation where universalism and secularism, attacked by radical Islam, must also face, by a sort of return shock, the tension of a certain right on an ethnocultural definition of French identity.

This form of false response to the Islamist threat exists.

However, the Republican Spring, to which I do not belong, speaks in its Manifesto

of "converging attacks"

against the Republic, no identity of nature between the extremisms, even if certain individualities have wrongly used the polemical concepts of Islamo-fascism and Islamo-leftism, which are traps set for those who want to grasp the historical specificities and philosophies of the totalitarianism that political Islamism constitutes.

Without counting that evoking an identity of nature between the extremists often implies the setting in equivalence all the religious “fundamentalisms”, as if the disciples of fire Mgr.

Lefebvre had committed, or even planned, attacks on French soil!

Marine Le Pen does not aim to pull the rug out from under the Republican Spring, which is not a political party and is little known to the general public.

On the other hand, she may want to show that the government is not doing enough against Islamism and the far left, but in doing so, it is the right fringe of LR that she wants to attract.

In fact, she wants to convey the message that Jérôme Sainte-Marie delivers in the latest issue of the magazine

Causeur

:

"The RN is neither extreme nor right-wing".
