"Stacheter", one of the oldest shops in town, is closing today.

Also a consequence of current political developments, as they say.

The Markt Schwabener company Stacheter has been around for 152 years, now it's all history.

The traditional shop is closed from today.

Markt Schwaben - "We had to do something, had already invested private money in the company and reduced the operating costs.

It couldn't go on like this, so we're closing our shop on December 23."

The summary of an analysis by Veronika Freyer, the owner of the traditional shop Stacheter on Ebersberger Straße, sounds so sobering.

This trading company, one of the oldest in the area, has existed since 1870, "a specialist shop with articles for modern living with high quality and style standards", according to the company's own definition.

That should and must be the end of it now, "we pulled the plug", as Freyer clarifies with a little melancholy in his voice.

Competition from online trade

The 43-year-old owner sees two main reasons for the end of the well-stocked household goods business, which, in addition to crockery, pots and cutlery, also offered a knife sharpening service, key cutting, sign engraving and security building services.

“On the one hand, online trading destroyed analogue shopping in local specialist shops long before the Corona period.

For many, convenience seems to take precedence over good advice, topped off by sometimes lower prices.”

For her and her husband, who comes from the IT industry and had already acted on the Internet himself, selling online was not attractive: "It's by no means just a picnic, because it requires a warehouse and sophisticated logistics,

Veronika Freyer also sees Russia's war against Ukraine as another reason for the recent slump in sales.

"After February 24th things really happened in quick succession, suddenly the buying behavior of many anxious customers had changed - since then they have been saving more, often only buying what seems elementary for life".

Until the summer of that year, she and her husband would have looked at this situation and then decided to pull the ripcord: "It was catastrophic in the end, we had to stop".

Successful from the start - just not anymore

Covert comments from customers, along the lines that their company "didn't need it anyway," did not necessarily contribute to an agreeable atmosphere.

In fact, her company was still doing well years ago and had had a solid fundus since 1870.

When Josef Stacheter from Grafing bought the shop here locally, mainly colonial goods and groceries were sold.

But the range quickly expanded to include fabrics, ovens and stoves, and finally expanded to include cast iron items and even steel girders.

These came by train from the Ruhr area and were delivered to customers by horse and cart.

But Stacheter, father of three children, died at the age of 40, his wife Anna took over the business.

His son Hubert later took over the company, but he didn't live long either, once again his wife had to step in.

The sale of large locking systems remains

After all, Veronika Freyer's grandmother, Olga Ihm, was the boss but kept the company name Stacheter, but the granddaughter must now end this family history.

How it goes on?

"We hope that our two full-time employees, one part-time employee and one mini-jobber will soon find another job in retail, many companies are currently looking for good people.

But my husband and I are leaving the Stacheter company and concentrating on selling large locking systems.” Perhaps Veronika Freyer will write a story about the fortunes of this company one day, after all she is a qualified journalist.
