The Josef Zerhoch elementary school in Peißenberg is now a certified sports elementary school.

At the celebration with Minister of Education Piazolo, the primary school received a corresponding sign, a bonus and a promise that will enrich the everyday school life of the first graders.

Peißenberg - "We had to meet certain criteria and then applied," says Vice Principal Karin Balke-Scheu, who is the sports officer at the Josef Zerhoch Elementary School in Peißenberg and had the idea of taking part in the certification process.

The Peißenberg elementary school benefited from the fact that the ice rink, the swimming pool, the large sports area and the river Ammer are in the immediate vicinity and are also used by the school for sports and exercise offers.

"We organize football tournaments, athletics festivals, ice hockey action days and take part in all competitions at district level," says Balke-Scheu.

All of these activities run alongside the usual physical education classes.

In addition, the elementary school meets the requirements for the exercise initiative "Full in Shape", in which there are daily exercise breaks for the 250 elementary school students.

"The sporting area is particularly important at our school," says the vice-principal.

Sport is not only important at the elementary school in Wörth for health reasons, but also because it affects other areas.

"The willingness to make an effort grows among children who do a lot of sport, also in other areas," says Balke-Scheu: "Staying power is trained well through sport."

The Josef Zerhoch elementary school works closely with TSV Peißenberg and the school also tries to get as many boys and girls as possible to do sports in the club.

"It's good for all areas when children do a lot of sport in a club," says Balke-Scheu.

Especially after the Corona period, it is important that "the children get back to sports".

In addition to the extensive range of sports and the favorable environment, the topic of "nutrition" also played a role in the certification.

In this area, too, the Josef Zerhoch elementary school has something to show for itself.

In the canteen in the open all-day care, organic food is offered and all first graders are provided with an organic lunch box.

The Josef-Zerhoch-Elementary School was elevated to a sports elementary school along with 36 other elementary schools from the south of Munich.

Karin Balke-Scheu represented her school at the certification ceremony and was presented with a certificate by Minister of Education Michael Piazolo, stating that the school in Wörth will be a certified primary school for sports from the 2022/2023 school year.

In addition to the certificate, there was also a prize of 1000 euros.

The money must be used to purchase new sports equipment.

In addition – the first graders in particular will benefit from this – all first graders will receive an additional sports lesson per week.

You will then have three hours of sport per week instead of the previous two hours.

The elementary school is staffed in such a way that it can also do this.

"That's real added value, that's really great," says Balke-Scheu.

So that in future everyone who enters the school knows that the Josef Zerhoch elementary school is a sports elementary school, a sign was handed over that will decorate the new main entrance when the time comes.

Once the extension is in place, it should be even easier for all students to move around during breaks.

"The extension creates a large inner courtyard, which is a large space for movement that we can use every day," says the vice-principal: "It's an enrichment that fits into our concept."
