New York-SANA
For the first time in decades, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution dealing with the situation in Burma, calling for an end to violence and the release of all political prisoners, including former Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi.
And Agence France-Presse reported that 12 members of the Council approved the decision without opposing any member, noting that the international resolution urges “the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners.”
The resolution also calls for “the immediate cessation of all forms of violence” and calls on “all parties to respect human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.”
The Security Council was never able to overcome its differences regarding this country to adopt a resolution, and it did not exceed the ceiling of official declarations.
