Does the district benefit from joining the Munich Transport and Tariff Association?

Or is the step unnecessary?

The district council debated - next year a decision should be made.

District – It has been more than three years since the topic came up.

In autumn 2019, the district council decided that the district's local public transport should be integrated into a tariff association.

The Munich Transport and Tariff Association, or MVV for short, was an obvious choice.

At that time, a total of nine districts and the urban districts of Rosenheim and Landshut agreed to take part in a feasibility study that should provide the basis for the decision.

Now the topic was back on the agenda in the district council – nothing had to be decided.

Instead, Veronika Schellhorn, officer for climate protection and mobility in the district office, and Günter Menzl, coordinator for the MVV districts, presented the current status - and further plans.

Schellhorn was not yet able to present data from the initiated study to the committee, which this time met in the “Zur Post” inn in Peißenberg.

The passenger counts planned from December 2020 to December 2021 "Corona thwarted the plan," she said.

Collecting data at that time would not have been meaningful - so the counts are now underway.

The aim is that in 2023 the decision will be made as to whether Weilheim-Schongau will join the tariff association.

Accession is conceivable from 2025.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter. And here is the Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.)

MVV membership: These costs are likely to come to the Weilheim-Schongau district

Menzl campaigned for him.

A common tariff would mean that income would be distributed more fairly.

But what the traffic in the district looks like - which buses drive, for example - that the responsible persons on site could decide for themselves in the future.

"No one wants to have a say in anything out here," assured Menzl.

But the district would be asked to pay.

Schellhorn presented a "rough cost analysis".

"It's the curse of the first number," she said - because the numbers are nothing more than a cautious estimate.

According to this, the district will probably have to pay 30,000 to 50,000 euros for the conversion and preparation for accession in 2023, and then 400,000 to 450,000 euros in 2024.

The annual costs from 2025 will then be around 800,000 to one million euros.

The prerequisite for the district's accession is that the Free State assumes part of the costs.

In 2019, for example, a grant of 85 percent was announced for the accession study.

If this shows that the expansion of the network is worthwhile, further funding beckons.

Tariff association still necessary after the introduction of the 49-euro ticket?

Stefan Emeis (Greens) missed a current point in Menzl's and Schellhorn's statements: He wanted to know whether the tariff association was still necessary after the introduction of the 49-euro ticket.

"That takes care of everything for the commuters," Emeis said.

Menzl heard this statement not for the first time.

"The opposite is true," he replied.

"When it gets easier for customers, it gets more complicated in the background." Because a passenger can buy his ticket anywhere.

“But you also want the funds that are being processed here,” explained Menzl.

A fair distribution of income is “not possible without associations”.

Armin Jabs (BFP) jumped to Menzl's side: "We can't say that the 49-euro ticket cures everything", there are also single journeys.

But not only with the tariff system, but also with the future of public transport, it makes sense to shape together, according to Manuel Neulinger (Greens).

"We won't get ahead if we continue to cook our soup alone in our local authority," he said.

"I think there is no way around further expanding the network systems."

Schellhorn also confirmed this.

Synergies would have to be created.

Tenders, legal advice, creating new connections: All of these are cost drivers – savings could possibly be made together with the MVV.

Menzl also emphasized that collective bargaining and sales would also be managed together - this saves on staff because not every district needs its own managers.

Rüdiger Imgart (AfD) was not convinced.

With more bureaucracy, it has rarely been cheaper.

"I don't think the MVV will solve our problems.

They'll stay here." Schellhorn, on the other hand, predicts "that the MVV will be positive.

She announced that she now wants to approach the cities with their own bus lines.

"Today was the big serve."
