"Beautiful Christmas Presents" is one of the most popular Christmas classics on TV.

But what is actor Chevy Chase, who plays the clumsy family man Clark Griswold, actually doing today?

New York - For many, the film "Nice Christmas Eve" is as much a part of Christmas as sausages and potato salad.

Unforgettable how Clark Griswold does everything to offer his family the best Christmas and fails mercilessly.

Christmas classic "Happy Christmas"

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation was released in 1989 as a sequel to The Shrill Four (1983) and Help, The Americans Are Coming (1987).

At the center of the action are family man Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), his wife Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) and their two children Audrey (Juliette Lewis) and Rusty (Johnnie Galecki).

For Christmas, Clark, affectionately called "Sparky" by his wife, has only one wish: to gather the whole family for an unforgettable celebration at his house.

But anyone who knows the chaotic Clark knows immediately: this can't go well.

First he is locked up in the attic, then, despite his best efforts, he cannot make his home, which is hung with fairy lights, shine in a festive way.

The cat catches fire, and so does the Christmas tree.

The neighbors are annoying, the family anyway and when his crazy cousin Eddie kidnaps Clark's boss and presents him with a huge red bow tied around his neck, the chaos is perfect.

What is Happy Birthday star Chevy Chase doing today?

Cornelius Crane Chase (79), as the actor and comedian is called, has repeatedly struggled with alcohol and drug problems since the 80s.

In 1995 he was convicted of drunk driving.

He tries several times to have his problems treated in addiction clinics.

In 1986, Chevy Chase appeared in the music video for Paul Simon's hit "You Can Call Me Al" and in 1987 and 1988 he hosted the Academy Awards.

In 2015, "Vacation - Wir sind die Griswolds" will be released as a sequel to "Beautiful Christmas Eve".

However, the comedy cannot build on previous successes of the Griswold series.

From 2009 to 2013, Chevy Chase played business magnate Pierce Hawthorne on Community, but left the show after the fourth season due to his alcohol and drug addiction.

He was last seen in the 2020 Australian comedy film The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee.

"The Neverending Story" is also one of the most popular Christmas classics.

However, Atreyu actor Noah Hathaway is hardly recognizable today.
