The procedure for electing the new Archbishop of Nicosia and Primate of Cyprus is surprising to say the least.
The Church of Cyprus, autocephalous jurisdiction of the Orthodox Church since 431, has a procedure worthy of a presidential election.
On Sunday December 18, 546,793 Cypriot faithful registered on the ecclesiastical electoral lists were called to the polls, in 942 centers, to decide among the six candidates running to replace Bishop Chrysostomos II, who died on November 7, 2022.
From the opening of the polls, at 10 a.m. - after Sunday mass - the media covered the event in the manner of a political ballot, mobilized all day.
Then at 8 p.m., they gave the first estimates at the exit of the polls.
Three candidates came out on top, with a third of the voters participating (30.05%): the Archbishop of Limassol, Mgr Athanasios, that of Tamassos, Mgr Isaiah, and that of Paphos, Mgr Georgios.
