Deutsche Bahn was probably more unpunctual this year than ever before.

Bahn boss Richard Lutz will collect 90,000 euros more in 2023 despite the poor performance of his group.

Berlin – He earns more than twice as much as Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD): Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, is the top earner among the heads of state-owned companies and institutions - with an annual salary of 900,000 euros.

Other board members of the railways sometimes collect more money than the chancellor.

In 2023, Lutz's salary will even increase: Then he will collect 90,000 euros more - and thus get a salary increase of ten percent, as reported by the

At the same time, customers are dissatisfied with the train because of the delays and cancellations.

Deutsche Bahn could even have been more unpunctual this year than ever before.

This is reported by the

Rheinische Post

, citing a response from the federal government to a small request from the Union faction.

Accordingly, in the months of May to September, the punctuality rate on many long-distance routes was only 50 to 60 percent.

"In the opinion of the federal government, the current development of punctuality is not satisfactory," says the statement.

In September in the west of the country only 55 percent of the ICE and IC trains were on time, in August 48 percent.

According to the information, in the east it was almost 68 percent in September and 63 percent in August.

The railway lists its quotas by region and not by federal state.

Dilapidated railway network: general renovation announced

"The train's punctuality rates have reached a historic low," said the transport policy spokesman for the Union faction, Thomas Bareiß (CDU), the

Rheinische Post

.

While in 2020 and 2021 long-distance trains would have achieved an average punctuality rate of 75 to 90 percent, "this year most routes are between 50 and 60 percent".

If something does not change in the development soon, then "the high loads in rail traffic will also have serious consequences for Germany as a business location," he warned.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) and the federal railway have already announced a general renovation.

The first project will start in 2024 on the Frankfurt/Main and Mannheim route, the so-called Riedbahn.

The Berlin-Hamburg route is to follow in 2025 and will be completely closed and renovated for around six months.

The general renovation will be a difficult time for rail customers, but after that everything should get better.

So far, however, such renovations have been spread over several years.

The infrastructure board of Deutsche Bahn, Berthold Huber, said that the rail network could hardly cope with the high volume of traffic.

It is simply too scarce, too old and too prone to failure.

"In order to be able to achieve short-term improvements here, the existing network must be renewed at high speed and its capacity expanded."
