Luxembourg has expressed concern to Tehran over one of its residents "
of Iranian origin
" arrested and sentenced to death in Iran, the Grand Duchy said in a statement.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, called his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, on Thursday December 22 to address the situation in the Islamic Republic and discuss the case of this man who "
according to available information, would have been arrested and sentenced to capital punishment
,” the statement from the Luxembourg government states.
“Luxembourg is opposed to the death penalty”
Iran is cracking down on a wave of anti-government protests and has announced at least 11 death sentences in connection with the protests.
Luxembourg did not specify whether the conviction of its resident fell within this context.
This European Union country stresses, however, that its head of diplomacy "
supports all ongoing efforts, at the level of the EU and its Member States, to plead in favor of the Iranian demonstrators who are risking their lives in order to obtain respect for their fundamental rights
”.
The press release recalls that "
Luxembourg is opposed to the death penalty, a cruel and inhuman punishment, in all circumstances and without exception
".
He does not mention the response of the Iranian minister.
