The Center for Health Protection announced today (23rd) that in the past week, from December 17th to 23rd, the CHP has recorded three new confirmed cases of melioid infection.

They live in Sham Shui Po District. The center's epidemiological investigation revealed that the onset of these cases occurred between mid-September and early November.

The first case involved a 62-year-old man who suffered from various long-term medical conditions, including diabetes and coronary heart disease, and was undergoing dialysis treatment for end-stage renal failure.

He developed fever and cough on September 2. He went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Caritas Hospital the next day. He was later discharged in stable condition.

However, he was re-admitted to the hospital on December 5 due to persistent fever and was discharged five days after hospitalization.

Five days after discharge, the patient went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Caritas Hospital again due to fever and abdominal pain and was required to stay in hospital for treatment.

The patient is still hospitalized in stable condition.

His peritoneal dialysis samples were assayed positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei.

The second case involved an 80-year-old man who also suffered from multiple long-term medical conditions, including abnormal fasting blood glucose and high blood pressure.

He started having chest pains on 15 October, but he went to the A&E Department of Caritas Hospital a month later and was clinically diagnosed with pneumonia.

Later, due to worsening chest pain and fever, he went to the emergency department of Caritas Hospital again on December 9 and was hospitalized for treatment.

The patient's condition has remained stable and he was discharged on December 26.

His sputum sample was assayed positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei.

The last case was an 82-year-old man with multiple long-term medical conditions, including diabetes and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

He developed shortness of breath on 10 November but sought medical attention at a general outpatient clinic on 5 December with a persistent cough.

He went to the A&E Department of Caritas Hospital three days later for worsening shortness of breath and was admitted to the hospital on the same day.

The patient's condition has remained stable and he was discharged on December 16.

His sputum sample was assayed positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei.
