Two people die and four others are injured.
Cuxhaven – Shortly before Christmas, two people died in a serious traffic accident involving two cars on Autobahn 27 near Geestland in the Cuxhaven district.
Another person was critically injured, police said on Friday.
All three were traveling in a car and were thrown from the car in the accident.
After initial investigations, the police assume that they were probably not buckled.
Three other occupants of the car were also slightly injured.
The driver of the other car, who was traveling alone, was not injured.
A police spokesman initially gave no further details on the identity of the person on Friday afternoon and pointed out that relatives had to be informed first.
It is not clear why the accident occurred between the Debstedt and Neuenwalde junctions.
According to police investigations, the car with six people was driving in the overtaking lane in the direction of Cuxhaven on Friday afternoon when it skidded for an unknown reason.
The car hit the other car that was in the right lane.
The first car then crashed into a crash barrier and threw itself back onto the lane of the dual carriageway.
According to the police, Autobahn 27 should remain closed in the direction of Cuxhaven until early Friday evening.
In addition to rescue workers, forensic technicians were also deployed.
Motorists were asked to avoid the route.
According to the Lower Saxony traffic management center, traffic was backed up on Friday afternoon in front of the accident site over a distance of four kilometers.
The Christmas holidays in Lower Saxony began on Friday - a day on which many people traditionally go to their families before the festival.
The ADAC had expected full streets.
