Vincent Lemire: "The history of Jerusalem requires more objectivity"

INTERVIEW – The historian publishes a comic strip aimed at making accessible the little-known aspects of what constitutes one of the oldest cities in the world.


Director of the French Research Center in Jerusalem, Vincent Lemire has worked in the Holy City for twenty-four years.

He publishes a monumental

History of Jerusalem

in comic strips, by Éditions Les Arènes.

A work that took him six years and whose result, admirable in its objectivity and very accessible, offers an unprecedented panorama of the 4000 years of history of the city three times holy.

- With this comic strip, you sign your eighth book on Jerusalem, the city where you have worked since the end of the 1990s. Why does it fascinate you so much?

It was a bit of a coincidence that brought me here, when my thesis director told me:

“Jerusalem is full of memorialists, chroniclers, ideologues.

But it lacks historians.

It's still true: there is a need for historians in Jerusalem.

I constantly discover mountains of unvisited, unopened archives, and not only on details.
