The storm that was called a "once in a generation event" continues to hit even today (Saturday) in the United States and Canada - more than 1.7 million people are left without electricity, and according to the forecasts the temperatures could drop to minus 56 degrees.

The harsh winter hits across the United States from coast to coast, and even reaches the southern border with Mexico.

So far, at least nine deaths have been reported in the United States due to the cold.

According to the US Weather Service, about 200 million residents, 60% of the US population, are under restrictions due to the storm.

In Canada, some schools in Ontario and Toronto have canceled school days.

At the same time, thousands of flights were canceled across the United States, along with train travel cancellations.

The cancellations come precisely during the holidays in the country, during which there is a rush.

Forecasters called the unusual weather a "once-in-a-generation event", due to the strength and scope of the storm hitting North America.

Temperatures dropped to a rare low mainly in the Midwest region of the United States and New England.

In the Midwest, the strong winds are lowering the temperature, and the forecast services warned against staying outside in these conditions, which could be life-threatening.

A state of emergency was declared in six countries.

"Christmas has been canceled," Mick Saunders, a resident of New York State, told CNN.

"All the family and friends agreed that it was safer not to celebrate the holiday."

Brian Terziak, also from New York, said that his mother and sister live 30 minutes away from him.

"We always do the holidays together, but this time we decided to stay at home until the storm is over," he explained.
