Spring-like temperatures sometimes prevail in Germany at Christmas.

However, the weather situation harbors some dangers, meteorologists warn.

While an arctic cold front throws the USA into chaos shortly before the holidays, we in Germany can almost dig out the T-shirts from the closet.

But appearances are deceptive.

It is already raining heavily in many places and there is a risk of severe storms in the coming week.

"The well-known western weather situation has fully arrived in Germany again," says Dominik Jung of the weather

The graduate meteorologist means low-pressure areas that are moving one after the other from the Atlantic to the Federal Republic.

These bring not only mild air, but also a lot of rain and strong winds, which can expand to a hurricane.

“The stormy weather will remain true to us regionally even over the holidays.

It's also very warm," explains Jung.

There were already hurricane gusts in the Black Forest on Thursday, with wind speeds of up to 125 km/h on the Feldberg.

Weather models predict "repeatedly heavy storms" in the last week of the year.

Spring-like weather at Christmas in southern Germany

The mild temperatures - one day before Christmas Eve the thermometer in the southwest could reach 18 degrees Celsius - pose another risk: the risk of flooding is increasing.

“Many rivers are already swollen.

For example the Moselle near Trier, which is currently approaching the six meter mark.

Many streams have also swollen in the foothills of the Alps and in the Black Forest.

The snow is thawing rapidly,” says Jung.

In the south-west of Germany new heavy rain is falling this afternoon.

The German Weather Service (DWD) issued severe weather warnings for the Black Forest and the Allgäu due to constant rain.

Up to 90 liters of rain per square meter could fall in the region.

Temperatures too mild for this time of year

At least the cold and snow are over for now.

"Winter will not return for the time being," says DWD meteorologist Andreas Friedrich.

Although the temperatures drop after Christmas, "they remain too mild for this time of year." Only in Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein could there be isolated snowflakes on Christmas Eve.

"If you're looking for snow, you have to go high up in the Alps," says Friedrich.
