Even as a small boy, Innozenz Vöst loved the crib in his parents' house.

"It wouldn't really be Christmas without a nativity scene," says the 73-year-old.

In his house in Biburg, he has been building an impressive crib for almost 30 years, thereby fulfilling his childhood dream.

Biburg – Until 1994, there was always a nativity scene in the house of Innozenz Vöst and his wife Katharina during Advent.

"A small one," he says.

But in 1994 he decided to tackle a large crib in the baroque style.

He got a suggestion at the Christmas market in Germering, later he bought the first figures in Gröbenzell: Joseph, Maria and the baby Jesus.

There were also ox and donkey, and the trained carpenter built the stable with his daughter.

New Characters

Over time, new figures were added every year - and the nativity scene in the dining room got bigger and bigger.

Innozenz Vöst diligently continued to build and tinker, adding more and more new scenes.

From then on he mostly bought his figurines in Val Gardena when he was vacationing there with his wife.

So shepherds and sheep, the Three Kings, goats, doves and angels moved into Biburg.

By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular

FFB newsletter.)

The couple spent three days scouring the shops for an angel figure until they found the right angel – just before they left for home.

"And the next year this figure was in every shop," says Innozenz Vöst with a smile.

Actually, the native Unterschweinbacher had imagined even larger figures than the 18s for his crib, namely 20s.

Otherwise the panorama would probably no longer be buildable today.

Because the expansion now takes two weeks.

Plates are fastened to trolleys, then stones, roots, bark and moss are distributed.

The buildings and figures follow.

The scenery looks different every year.

"I even like the landscape without figures best," says Katharina Vöst.

But they belong to the crib.

This year, granddaughter Paula, two and a half years old, was allowed to help grandpa set it up.

Then there was even an outhouse

During the year the figures are in display cases in the living room - they are beautiful enough to only enjoy the sight in December and January.

Innozenz Vöst keeps a record of his characters.

He knows the date, price and place of purchase of each one.

There are now around 200 figures.

He added details himself.

The loaves of bread in the bakery are dowels that he grinded into shape, the apples are painted wooden beads.

My space

Many Biburgers used to come by and marvel at the crib.

The Vöst family also had visitors from the kindergarten.

Once a child asked where the figures go to the toilet.

Innozenz Vöst promised to build a little house next year.

Since then there has been a small outhouse – which is also occupied.

The work on the crib is still going on.

There's definitely still room for a few figures, says the 73-year-old.

You certainly won't come back from your next holiday in South Tyrol without new crèche residents.
