Excitement about a windbreak hedge near Germerswang: Many trees have already been marked for felling, and some citizens fear that the forest will be thinned too much.

Maisach – City Hall boss Hans Seidl (CSU) tries to calm down: You turn on a specialist from the lower nature conservation authority and check exactly what you can cut away.

In general, according to Seidl, one wants to preserve the structure - but in its function for nature.

And for that it is necessary to cut out now and then.

A citizen had addressed the topic in the current quarter of an hour at the beginning of the municipal council meeting.

Around "100 old big trees" would probably be felled soon.

This destroys the windbreak and the biotope.

On the open floor

It is about a windbreak hedge several hundred meters long in an open area in the continuation of Germerswanger Lugbergstraße in the direction of Stefansberg.

According to Seidl, the structure of hedges and trees was created in the late 1960s.

There are fields to the left and right, and a field path runs to the west of the hedge, which is used by farmers, but also by walkers and joggers.

So far nothing has been liked.

As in the municipal council meeting, Seidl also emphasized in the Tagblatt interview that such hedges must be maintained.

A "revision" is necessary every ten to 15 years.

Because the dirt road as a connection for the farmers should not overgrow.

In addition, the management of the field should not be restricted by excessive shading due to bushes/trees that are too high.

The most important thing, however, is to preserve the function of the structure: the trees should not become too dominant and the hedges – which are retreats for small game – should not overwhelm.

Therefore, trees are removed.

(

By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular

FFB newsletter.)

"The hedge is not only a beautiful landscape element, but also has a biological effect," emphasizes Seidl.

And you want to get that.

Didn't do anything wrong

The new town hall environmental officer, Max Bichel, “did nothing wrong,” says the mayor.

Bichl is a forester and therefore an expert.

In order to reassure the citizens, they still want to get a second opinion and have therefore turned on the lower nature conservation authority.

A decision is made on site as to which trees are actually to be felled.

Until that is determined, nothing happens.

My space

It is common practice in Maisach to comb through hedges.

The intervals would be far apart anyway, because an intervention is associated with effort.

So that the costs are as low as possible and the building yard does not have to get involved, the municipality awards such felling to so-called self-promotion: You get the wood, but you have to do the work.

Of course, they would have to commit to cutting down only marked trees and not damaging other vegetation.

Felling is allowed until the end of February, after which time interventions are prohibited until the end of September due to the nature conservation law.
