The neighborhood help (NBH) Fraunberg “JAa!” makes an invaluable contribution to people of all ages practically every day.

Small-scale help takes up a large part of the volunteer hours of the 15 to 20 active helpers.

Fraunberg

chairwoman Dagmar von Fraunberg particularly remembers a case that accompanied her and her colleagues for almost two years: An elderly gentleman became seriously ill and had no one from his family or circle of friends to look after him: "We reached out to him the poor, made appointments, helped with applications or doctor’s letters.” The senior was also supported in the household and as far as possible with financial matters.

"We were also able to bring him a feeling of warmth, give him courage and encouragement in his difficult time." The whole thing was spread over several shoulders at the NBH, and when the patient came to the hospice, visits from Fraunberg still followed.

Recently, there was an acute emergency when a citizen broke his hip.

The chairwoman: "He was also alone, and we jumped in." After a few weeks in the hospital and rehabilitation, his apartment was cleaned properly: "This allowed the man to return to his normal life with peace of mind."

Help in an emergency, that's what the NBH stands for.

Driving services are the main field of activity: "Many older people prefer to call us so as not to bother their families." The small monetary contribution that those seeking help have to make is also important: "This gives them the feeling that they are paying us and the inhibition threshold drops.”

The members of the Fraunberger NBH – currently around 115 women and men – all come from the community: “We see ourselves as helping from the place for the place,” says the chairwoman.

The name suffix "JAa!" of the facility, which operates under the sponsorship of Caritas, means "young & old active" - people of all ages are taken care of.

Under the umbrella of the NBH is the dwarf garden, which is open twice a week for three hours in the Reichenkirchen rectory for children aged two to four.

Transport services from the refugee accommodation in Grucking in the direction of the St. Florian children's home are also on the programme.

Above all, mothers whose offspring visit the children's facility themselves make an extra round so that the young refugees arrive safely there.

"It's the best integration opportunity there is, because that's where they learn the German language," emphasizes von Fraunberg.

Speaking of refugee aid: Hansjörg Walter in particular does excellent work here.

For years he has been concerned about the residents of the accommodation in Grucking: "During this time he was able to solve an immense number of problems.

He also takes care of the school-age children and is even there for everyone when they have already moved away,” praises the chairperson of Walter's commitment.

The goal for seniors is to be able to stay at home for as long as possible.

In addition to driving services, shopping activities and regular visits also play a role.

You know each other, and nice conversations sometimes work wonders.

In order for the older residents to get to know each other better, the NBH set up a handicraft group.

20 to 25 women meet twice a month under the direction of Elvira Stulberger.

This results in beautiful works that are sold, among other things, at the Christmas market.

Stulberger, like Walter, earned the “Der Fraunberger” community award for commitment in 2021.

There is generally very good cooperation with the community, as Mayor Hans Wiesmaier also praises: "It is only thanks to the neighborhood help and their helpers that we can master the demographic change for young and old." Because there are no longer large family groups as there used to be, jump the NBH more and more frequently.

So that the people of Fraunberg, regardless of their age, can get to know each other even better, a meeting place is planned for the near future.

For this purpose, the municipality has acquired a property directly at the town hall and wants to convert it.

The NBH would also like to support getting to know each other with a reading café, and for von Fraunberg the ideal case is: “If the people already know each other, they might help each other without it going through us.”

In general, society has given up asking for help: “People have to find the courage to do that again.

We are there for you.” The operations managers Rita Sainer, Christl Rasthofer and Jürgen Notka are available alternately during the week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can also contact us outside of these times, everyone will be called back.

Helpers are also welcome to get in touch: "We are happy about everyone, and we also welcome new ideas," emphasizes von Fraunberg, who is supported in her work by deputy Gerda Bart, among others.

In 2021, the volunteers worked almost 900 hours for their fellow human beings on 439 assignments, driving over 5500 kilometers.

This is an affair of the heart for everyone in the small village community, says the chairwoman.
