After the fatal attack in Paris, the alleged perpetrator was admitted to a psychiatric ward.

A doctor found that the man's state of health was not compatible with a stay in police custody, it was said.

As the Paris public prosecutor announced, the suspect should be brought before an investigating judge as soon as his condition allows.

On Friday, the suspect is said to have fired several shots and killed three people in a Kurdish community center as well as a restaurant and a hair salon.

Three other people were injured in the attack in the tenth arrondissement of Paris.

According to the Kurdish umbrella organization Kurdish Democratic Council in France (CDK-F), all the victims are Kurdish activists.

The alleged perpetrator, a 69-year-old Frenchman, was arrested.

The public prosecutor's office initiated investigations into intentional killing and serious violence, and a racist motive is also being investigated.

"He obviously wanted to attack foreigners," said Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

However, it is unclear whether the attack was explicitly aimed at Kurds.

A specific motive is also unclear, the suspect was not known to the security authorities as a right-wing extremist.

Media reported the man told police he fired the shots because he was a racist.

Heated mood at demonstration

The CDK-F had classified the attack as a "terrorist attack" that came after numerous Turkish threats.

Turkey has long fought Kurdish independence aspirations promoted by the banned Kurdish Workers' Party PKK and other Kurdish organizations.

A number of people gathered at the Place de la République in Paris on Saturday afternoon to condemn the attack.

The CDK-F wrote about thousands of participants before the official start of the demonstration.

The police initially gave no information on the number of participants.

According to media reports, the mood was partly heated.

On the fringes of the demonstration, there were therefore individual clashes.

Demonstrators threw at the law enforcement officers and the police used tear gas, the broadcaster BFMTV reported.

Eleven people were arrested, police said.

Some cars and shop windows were damaged.

Also on Friday evening there were slight clashes with the security forces at a meeting at the site of the attack.
