At the end of the Oberland concerts, shortly before Christmas, the musicians from Quadro Nuevo in the monastery were enthusiastic.

Organizer Günter Sirsch had imagined his farewell differently.

Benediktbeuern - His last concert, his very last concert as organizer of the Oberland Konzerte - and he wasn't there.

With the tone poets of Quadro Nuevo, with melodies that don't fit into any genre, Günter Sirsch dropped the curtain on his Oberland concerts after 30 years.

However, Sirsch could not be there himself because of a corona disease.

Two and three quarters of a year, Sirsch said in an audio message that evening, he escaped the virus, but now it hit him at the last concert of all places.

The audio message was played to the audience between the two encores.

It was an atmospheric evening, both for the audience and visible for the artists.

The faces went with the music.

With their eyes closed, the musicians felt every note.

Here's a smile.

There a gentle swing.

Thoroughbred instrumentalists.

Special Christmas music

For the four musicians, the evening in the Allianz Hall of the Benediktbeuern monastery marked the finale of their Advent concerts.

"We've been playing the program since December 1st," said Mulo Francel as he switched from clarinet to saxophone between pieces.

This program included Christmas carols, including, according to Francel, "a piece exclusive to Jesus", namely "Jesus bleibet meine Freude".

But also music to which Jesus "possibly danced", namely Egyptian sounds.

And a piece that was "dedicated to a symbolic figure" who walks through a thorn forest and yet maintains a positive attitude - that is, Maria.

Audio message at the end

In addition to Mulo Francel, Andreas Hinterseher (accordion, trumpet, bandoneon), DD Lowka (bass, percussion) and guitarist Philipp Schiepek were also on stage.

For example, the instrumental quartet presented the title track “December”, written by Schiepek and playing with ambivalent winter moods.

In their musical winter, the thoroughbred musicians also grabbed football and played a lively piece that is named after the 7-1 final score of the 2014 World Cup semi-final between Germany and Brazil.

In this work, the title is also incorporated musically, revealed Francel: 16 seven-eighth bars.

With "Mocca Swing" the quartet wanted to release the audience into the evening.

Of course not, and then, after much applause with hands and feet, added two more encores, including a Christmas wind piece.

In between, however, Günter Sirsch's audio message was inserted.

"After 30 years we are closing the curtain," said the organizer at the end of the concert series and thanked his companions, his understanding family, the many artists and the audience.

And he had to say: "Today no prospect of upcoming concerts." A good two hours earlier, Günter Sirsch's son had opened the final concert with Quadro Nuevo.

At the end of the Oberland concerts he said: "My dad loved doing it".
