The PA threatens the new government: "We will increase the activity in The Hague, the people will not be silent" | Israel today

2022-12-25T21:01:09.462Z

In Ramallah, they are following the developments surrounding the establishment of the right-wing government • A senior official in the PA: "May Israel begin preparing for the prosecution of its senior officials" • Another senior official, one of Abu Mazen's opponents, said: "The Palestinian leadership has lost the justification for its existence, it has no other alternative but to turn to the world to save it"

The Palestinian Authority is concerned about the progress of establishing the new government in Israel.

They follow the developments every day - starting with the appointment of right-wing figures in the government to senior positions, to the expansion of the powers of the designated ministers Ben Gabir and Smotrich, and ending with the various publications regarding the new government's policies, positions and plans regarding the Palestinians.

In Ramallah they say that the "demolition of the two-state solution" is becoming more real, and that they expect that the "creeping annexation policy and the expansion of settlements" in Judea and Samaria - will be established on the ground.

"The new government is a terrorist government with extremists and figures who operate outside the law," a senior official in the Palestinian Authority told Israel Hayom.

"These people do not consider international decisions and that is even more dangerous. This does not mean that we will sit idly by. On the contrary. For any aggressive action that this government takes against us, we will oppose and respond.

"Our people will not be ready for the continuation of the settlements and all the provocations that Israel makes," added the official.

"You saw what happened after Sharon went up to al-Aqsa in 2000, and what happened last year in Sheikh Jarrah, and before that when you placed the magnetometers at the gates of al-Aqsa. Our people have not been silent and will not be silent. We will increase our activity in front of the international courts . That Israel prepares for the prosecution of its senior officials."

"The trend - escalation against the Palestinians"

Another senior Palestinian noted that the incoming Israeli government is "very bad for the Palestinians", and warned against what he described as a trend of escalation.

"This is going in the direction of escalation against the Palestinian people - expanding settlements, taking over more land, confiscating Palestinian land, proposing a death penalty law, and I predict that all of this will lead to a warming of the atmosphere here, and in the region as well."

The official, who is considered one of the political opponents of the chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Abu Mazen, stated that the current Palestinian leadership is powerless and unable to deal with the current situation. .

The political situation of the Palestinian people is discouraging.

Going to the International Court of Justice is a welcome step, but it shows that the leadership has no other alternative but to go to the world that will save it," said the official.

Abu Mazen is weak in the polls

According to a recent Palestinian poll, the results of which were published last week, if Palestinian presidential elections had been held today, Abu Mazen would have lost by a considerable margin to Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

In addition, the survey showed that a senior Fatah official, Marwan Barghouti, imprisoned in Israel and sentenced to life imprisonment, is very popular, and if he had faced Hania, he would have won with a majority of 61%.

"Referring to The Hague is a good idea, but the execution process and the results - that's something else," added the official who opposes Abu Mazen.

"Many people didn't notice, but the day before the discussion of the proposal submitted to the UN General Assembly requesting an opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the occupation, the word 'without delay' was removed, which means that it is not a priority.

"Even if the move is successful, the question is whether the Palestinians will actually see a change in their daily lives. If the procedure is completed, it could put Israel in a problematic position, and cause a deterioration in its relations with some countries, but we need to look at how it will benefit us. Will this in itself bring To create a new reality for the Palestinians? No. This must be backed up by a strategy and additional measures. The current Palestinian leadership looks outside instead of looking inside what the people need," said the official.
