The price of consumption: within about a year and a half, thousands of reports were distributed to consumers of prostitution | Israel Hayom

Two years since the law went into effect that allows police officers to fine those caught in prostitution - now the data is revealed • Every month police officers register hundreds of fines • Last year 2,471 reports were handed out

Within a year, there was a drastic increase in the amount of reports that the police hand out to consumers of prostitution. As I recall, at the end of social struggles and attempts at legislation that lasted for about a decade, a law came into effect two years ago that states that anyone who consumes or tries to consume prostitution commits a criminal offense and can be subject to an administrative fine.

Data obtained by "Israel Hayom" shows that in the first six months since the introduction of the law, the police hardly enforced it.

Over time, enforcement increased and hundreds of reports were handed out every month. In total, in the last 16 months, 4,000 reports were imposed on consumers of prostitution.

This is an offense that was added to the existing criminal offenses in the Penal Code, and its purpose is to reduce prostitution in Israel and eradicate it as much as possible.

Today, a fine of NIS 2,000 can be imposed, and a repeat offense will be grounds for doubling the fine (4,000).

The fines may be imposed by police officers who identify the commission of the crime in the field or even being in a place that provides prostitution services.

Those who are caught committing many crimes can be charged criminally, and fined up to NIS 75,300.

The police claimed at the time that it was prepared for enforcement and even trained police officers specifically for the task, but during the first seven months of last year the law was hardly enforced.

In January and March one person was fined, and in other months between 2 and 4 reports were handed out.

In August, the enforcement changed.

In November 2021, a record of 525 reports was recorded. This year the numbers stabilized. In 2022, 2,471 reports were handed out, and another 123 doubled the fine for a repeat offense.
