Spectacular accident on Christmas Eve: Around midnight, a woman from Weyarn (58) lost control of her BMW, shot across a meadow and landed on the roof of the Weyarn recycling center.

The woman suffered moderate injuries – and was lucky that her car made an automatic emergency call.

Weyarn

– Where is there supposed to be an accident here?

Ralph Benda, commander of the Weyarn fire brigade, woke an alarm from a deep sleep late on Christmas Eve.

"BMW had an accident between Wattersdorf and Bruck," read the message.

Five vehicles with 21 active moved out.

"We drove the route and didn't find anything at first," reports Benda.

Until someone noticed the tracks in the meadow.

"And a taillight shone from the roof of the recycling center," says Benda, "there was actually a car stuck in the roof." An unusual rescue operation began.

As reported by the police, the driver of the white BMW X 3, a 58-year-old woman from the municipality of Weyarn, was alone on the MB 18 district road from Weyarn towards Seehamer See shortly before midnight.

After Wattersdorf, she lost control of the car in a sharp left turn.

The BMW rattled straight ahead about 100 meters across a meadow, shot through a scrub and, after a short flight, hit the roof of the Vivo company building below at the Weyarn recycling center.

Firefighters had to remove the driver's door

The driver sustained moderate injuries in the crash, police said.

"She was approachable," reports fire brigade operations manager Benda.

The car stuck "upside down" in the roof, it got stuck between the roof and floor of the company building.

First, the emergency services had to open a gate with the cut-off grinder in order to get to the injured person.

The driver's door was removed using hydraulic equipment to free the woman from the wreckage.

After first aid by an ambulance, the emergency services took her to Agatharied Hospital.

The seriously injured woman did not make the emergency call herself, but rather an automatic rescue signal (“e-call”) from the car triggered by the impact.

According to an EU regulation, manufacturers have had to equip all new cars with this emergency call system as standard since March 2018.

"Without the quick emergency call, things could have turned out differently for the woman," Benda suspects.

The accident might not have been noticed until daylight.

"Even the cold would have become a problem for the injured person," believes Benda.

Police said it's still unclear why the woman lost control of the car.

The BMW is a total loss estimated at 20,000 euros.

A mobile crane from the Waldschütz company lifted the wreck from the roof that night.

The damage to the Vivo building should amount to 30,000 euros.

To support the Weyarn comrades, the fire brigades from Feldkirchen-Westerham (three vehicles) and Reichersdorf (six active) also moved out.

According to Benda, the Christmas Eve mission was only over at around 2:30 a.m.
