Cableway traffic in Haifa stopped this evening (Monday) following a power outage.
The unusual malfunction was caused by the stormy weather.
About thirty passengers got stuck in the carriages in the air and were rescued by fire and rescue fighters and emergency teams who were called to the scene.
Following the malfunction, the cable car is expected to be on strike until tomorrow morning - then the current will be restored.
No injuries were reported.
The operator of the cable car stated that no special rescues took place.
"Everything is coordinated with MDA and the fire brigade," he said. "The light and the intercom in the cars are working and they are in contact with the passengers." It was also reported that this is the first power outage since the cable car was opened as a public transportation vehicle in April.
About two months ago, dozens of passengers got stuck in the Haifa cable car while it was in the air for more than an hour and a half.
There were no injuries in the incident, and after the malfunction was repaired, the cable car emphasized that there was no safety problem.
However, many calls for help were received by the Ihud Hatzla organization following the incident, and it was reported that it caused "stress and anxiety" among the passengers.
"It was an abnormal nightmare. We were hanging between heaven and earth, literally," told Walla Dotan Azlan, an engineer resident of Harish who was in the trailer together with his brother Shanir, a doctor from Ra'anana, each with a toddler.
"It started right when we left the university station and each time the cable car continued a few meters and stopped. The children were stressed and the truth was we were also stressed by it. The frustrating part was that there was no one to talk to."
