(CNN) --

With much of the United States still reeling from a nearly week-long winter storm, flight cancellations and delays and other transportation problems continue to pile up on Christmas Day.

More than 1,600 flights into, into or out of the United States had already been canceled as of 5:30 pm ET on Sunday, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

And the flights that could still take off suffered almost 5,800 delays.

Christmas Day is traditionally a light day for passenger flights.

As a demonstration of the magnitude and impact of the storm, it was an airport in the south that was hit hardest at noon on Christmas Day.

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), the busiest in the world, was the one with the most cancellations and delays.

Number 2, Denver International Airport, was more than 1,000 miles away, in the Rocky Mountains.

Denver International Airport kept a sense of humor during the stressful event, posting a tweet of what appeared to be an airport worker playing "Jingle Bells" on a violin.

The temperature at 3:30 am MT at Denver International Airport was already above freezing at 8°C (46°F).

Is that...a fiddler on the runway?!🎻🎶

In hard-hit western New York, things were still too grim for humor.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) tweeted that it would be closed completely until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27, extending its originally scheduled closure to 11 a.m. Monday.

The temperature in BUF at 3:00 pm ET was 20°F (-7°C) with blowing snow and 38 km/h winds, according to the National Weather Service.

The arrival of the massive storm was untimely for travelers, who had begun to push Christmas week flight numbers back toward pre-pandemic levels.

On Christmas Eve, there were a total of 3,487 canceled flights, according to FlightAware.

Friday was the worst day, with 5,934 cancellations, while almost 2,700 cancellations were registered on Thursday.

This winter megastorm over the eastern two-thirds of the country is forecast to slowly moderate by Monday.

As of 12:15 p.m. ET, there were only 153 preventative cancellations for Monday.

Bus and train service

Late Saturday night, Greyhound posted its latest bus service disruptions, which focused on routes to and from Buffalo and Syracuse in New York.

Amtrak's latest service alert was posted Friday.

He said then that bad weather "has caused Amtrak to make several services and cancellations between now and Sunday, December 25."

The train company said affected customers should be able to take trains that leave at similar times or on a different day.
