The United Nations called on countries in South Asia to rescue as many as possible of the 190 refugees who were aboard the small boat that had been floating in the Andaman Sea for weeks. The refugees fled from camps in Bangladesh, where they arrived after fleeing their homeland of Myanmar, where they are not considered citizens.

Dozens of hungry and weak Rohingya Muslims were found on a beach in Indonesia's northern province on Sunday, after a weeks-long journey at sea.

A group of 58 men arrived at the beach of Indrapetra in Ladong, a fishing village, reported local police chief Roli Yuisa Awey.

Fishermen who noticed the men in the rickety wooden boat helped them reach the shore and reported their arrival to the authorities.

Thai authorities said four women and one man were found floating near Surin Island and another woman was found in the Similan Islands, where she was rescued by fishermen.

"They are very weak from hunger and dehydration. Some of them are sick after a difficult journey at sea," said Eway, adding that three people were rushed to the clinic for medical treatment.

The UN and other organizations have called on countries in South Asia to rescue as many as possible of the 190 refugees who have been aboard the small boat in the Andaman Sea for weeks. According to the UN, they are fleeing the terrible conditions that prevail in camps in Bangladesh.

About a million Rohingya from Myanmar currently live in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh, including tens of thousands who fled their homeland Myanmar after a brutal military campaign in 2012.

The number of Rohingya who have left Bangladesh by boat this year has jumped more than fivefold compared to last year, according to human rights groups.

In Myanmar, where most of the population is Buddhist, the Rohingya do not receive citizenship and are seen as illegal immigrants from South Asia.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees initially said it feared the boat, which set out at the end of November, was lost at sea and all 190 passengers died. "We are hoping against hope that the 190 missing will be found alive somewhere," UN agency spokesman Babar Baloch said earlier this month.

According to the UN refugee agency, 2022 was one of the worst years in terms of missing and dead, after 2013 and 2014, when 900 and 700 Rohingya died or went missing, respectively, in the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal, after violence in their country forced them to flee.

Bangladesh previously stopped the smugglers. It also asked the international community to help it ease the flow of refugees coming to it. Earlier this month, two organizations said that about 20 people died of hunger or thirst on a boat that was carrying at least 100 people and was abandoned for two weeks before drifting off the coast of Malaysia. In November, two boats carrying 230 Rohingya, including women and children, have also reached the shores of northern Indonesia.
