Long-time CDU member of the Bundestag Michael Fuchs has died.
This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the CDU Rhineland-Palatinate on Monday without further information.
In 2017, Fuchs announced that he no longer wanted to run for the Bundestag and told the Rhein-Zeitung: "I think I should then leave the field at the age of almost 69.
Younger people can certainly do it better.« Four electoral terms in parliament are enough, the Koblenz politician told the dpa news agency at the time.
"I've worked a lot in my life and would like to have time for my three grandchildren, for example." His withdrawal was entirely voluntary.
Fuchs was first elected to the Bundestag in 2002 and was deputy parliamentary group leader from November 2009.
In his hometown of Koblenz, the pharmacist and entrepreneur sat on the city council from 1990 to 2006.
According to the Bundestag, he held positions in several trade associations and was President of the Federal Association of German Wholesale and Foreign Trade from 1992 to 2001.
Michael Fuchs died at the age of 73.
