During the year 2022, the health sector witnessed an expansion in the opening of hospitals, health centers and new departments, in addition to developing the infrastructure of hospitals and health centers affiliated to it in all governorates and providing them with medical devices, and working to secure medicines, in addition to national vaccination campaigns and health awareness campaigns.

Hospitals, health centers, departments and divisions opened for the year 2022 Hospitals:

  • The opening of Douma Ambulance Hospital in Damascus Countryside after rehabilitation.

  • Opening of Harasta Hospital in Damascus Countryside with a capacity of 90 beds.

  • The opening of 3 field hospitals in the governorates (Rural Damascus, Aleppo, Homs) with a total of 358 beds distributed among 135 in Rural Damascus, 120 in Aleppo, and 100 beds in Homs.

  • The opening of the cardiac catheterization department at the General Authority of Al-Basil Hospital for Heart Diseases and Surgery in Damascus.

  • Expansion of the dialysis department in the General Authority of Qalamoun Hospitals “Al-Nabak Hospital” to a capacity of 19 beds.

  • The retinal surgery department at the Eye Hospital in Aleppo has been put into operation after a 10-year hiatus due to terrorism.

  • Rehabilitation and expansion of the emergency department at Salamieh National Hospital.

  • Opening of the Surgery Division and the Plastic Clinic at the Dermatology and Venereology Hospital.

  • Inaugurating a group of development projects at Al-Mowasat Hospital, at a cost of approximately two billion pounds.

  • Inauguration of the new solar energy project at Al-Assad University Hospital.

Health centers:

  • The opening of the Physical Medicine Center in Hama Governorate.

  • Rehabilitation of 6 centers during 2022, and work continues in 18 health centers in various governorates.

  • The opening of a health clinic in the town of Alaqin in the northern countryside of Daraa.

  • Expansion of audiology clinics to reach 27 centers.

  • Installing a solar energy system for 39 health centers.

  • Providing funding for the rehabilitation and restoration of 12 health centers through the Al-Ghafi Organization, and 28 health centers through the COVAX facility.

  • Equipping 8 border medical points, and receiving 8 ambulances for them.

  • The opening of Salah Al-Din Health Center in Aleppo after its reconstruction with a new vision.

Ambulances New medical devices that were supplied to hospitals and others that were put back into service:

  • The ambulance system was supplied with 18 ambulances.

  • A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine was put into service at Martyr Zaid Al-Shariti Hospital in As-Suwayda.

  • The CT machine was put into service at Al-Qutaifa National Hospital in Rif Dimashq, more than a year after it was discontinued.

  • Putting the kidney stone fragmentation device into service at the National Hospital in Al-Hasakah after carrying out the necessary maintenance for it.

  • The allocation of 4 artificial respirators provided by Pope Francis “Pope of the Vatican” was distributed at a rate of two artificial respirators for the benefit of the General Authority of Al-Basil Hospital for Heart Diseases and Surgery in Damascus, and two devices for Al-Basil Center for Cardiac Diseases and Surgery in Aleppo.

  • Putting 7 oxygen generating stations into service in each of Drakeesh Hospital - Al-Qadmus Hospital - General Authority of Damascus Hospital - General Authority of Al-Basil Hospital in Tartous - General Authority of Children's Hospital in Aleppo - A station in Al-Zabadani Hospital - Zahi Azraq Hospital in Aleppo.

  • Maintenance of 3 oxygen generating stations in each of the “General Authority of the Red Crescent Hospital - Al-Basil Hospital in Karm Al-Lawz - Ibn Al-Nafis Medical Complex.

  • The introduction of 4 CT machines into service in each of the “General Authority of Damascus Hospital – Harasta National Hospital – Al-Tal Hospital – General Authority of Mamdouh Abaza Hospital.

  • Providing hospitals and health centers in various governorates with 16 echocardiogram machines, 9 anesthesia machines, one arc ray machine, 5 CR machines, 4 DR machines, 11 hemodialysis machines, 16 automatic respirators, 28 regular ventilators, and 45 portable ventilators.

  • Providing 1,600 oxygen cylinders.

  • Four incubators, medical and surgical supplies, and first aid supplies were placed in Damascus Hospital provided by Russia.

  • Two devices “cardiac catheterization, 3D imaging” and “multi-slice tomography” were put into service at the General Authority of the Martyr Basil Al-Assad Hospital for Heart Diseases and Surgery in Damascus.

Awareness and vaccination campaigns implemented during 2022

  • The “Don’t Sweeten It Up” campaign, which included holding community events and educational lectures, distributing guidance brochures on the harmful effects of white sugar on public health, and the need to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent diseases.

  • 4 intensive national campaigns to vaccinate against the Coronavirus, with more than 7 million vaccine doses secured.

  • The cholera campaign is underway, as 2 million doses of vaccine have been secured through vaccination campaigns in the countryside of Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Raqqa and Hasakah, which started at the beginning of this December.

  • A national campaign against polio in March, with a coverage rate of 84.4 percent.

  • Campaign to promote routine vaccination and follow up on dropouts in June, as the number of vaccinated children reached 45.55 children.

  • A national campaign against polio in the tenth month, when the coverage rate reached 79.8 percent, while the completion rate in accessible places reached 91.8 percent.

  • A national campaign against measles in the tenth month, the coverage rate reached 76 percent, while the completion rate in accessible places reached 87 percent.

  • Campaign to promote routine vaccination and follow up on dropouts in November, as the number of vaccinated children reached 61,648 children.

  • The 2022-2023 School Vaccine Campaign is underway.

  • The national awareness campaign for early detection of breast cancer in the governorates in the month of October, whose services provided in all governorates amounted to: 417,121 clinical breast examination services, 13925 mammographic imaging services, and 5374 ultrasound examination services.

In terms of providing medicines, the Ministry has encouraged the local industry through:

  • License for 717 pharmaceutical products.

  • Launched 571 new cosmetics.

  • License for 5 laboratories.

  • Adding 10 new production lines.

  • Provision of 284 items of medicine.

  • Providing 146 imported medicines.

The most important achievements of the health cadres during 2022:

  • For the first time in the General Authority of Damascus Hospital, a laparoscopic surgery was performed for a bleeding fibrous angioma in adolescents for a qualitative condition.

  • An accurate qualitative surgical procedure was performed for a rare case of removing a “retaining epidermal thyroid cyst”, and 16 similar cases were recorded worldwide in the General Authority of Damascus Hospital.

  • Navigating-guided laparoscopic surgery to remove an isolated fungal ball in the frontal sinus of a forty-year-old patient, which is a rare case worldwide, in the General Authority of Damascus Hospital.

  • Saving the life of a nine-month pregnant woman with a placenta deeply embedded in the uterine artery, by performing a caesarean section, and the mother and fetus are in good health at the General Authority of Al-Zahrawi Hospital in Damascus.

  • Saving the life of a 64-year-old patient, by performing a surgical operation in the General Authority of Al-Basil Hospital in Tartous.

  • A basal cell tumor was successfully removed from the face of an 80-year-old woman with a rare and complex surgery by a medical team at Al-Basil Specialized Hospital in Karm Al-Lawz in Homs.

  • The Abu Dhar Al-Ghafari Center in Damascus obtains the ISO 9001-2015 certificate related to the development of medical work and the provision of services with the best quality.

  • Medicine magazine published a case of the success of the General Authority of Damascus Hospital in treating a 34-year-old man suffering from ulcerative colitis with pneumonia Covid 19 and SARS Cove 2 with biological medicines.

  • The British Journal of Public Health and Environment published a research article prepared by a group of resident doctors at Damascus Hospital on self-treatment, which means the patient's diagnosis of his disease.
