Millions of people in the United States remained in their homes today (Monday) under a severe warning, this is the third day, against the backdrop of the raging deadly storm, in which 55 people have been killed so far, most of them in Erie County in the state of New York.

In the city of Buffalo, incidents of looting were reported in the closed stores.



Disruptions continued in transportation throughout the country and the difficult travel conditions were defined as "life-threatening."

"The life-threateningly low temperatures combined with strong icy winds will create a life-threatening situation for those on the road, farmers and those who work outside the home," the National Weather Service alert said.

The storm stretches from the Mexican border in the south to the Great Lakes near Canada.



According to NBC News, as of last night, 55 people were killed in 12 states: Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

The area hit hardest so far is Erie County in New York State, with Buffalo as its capital.

Of the 55 victims, 25 were found in Erie - seven of them in Buffalo.

The authorities warned of an increase in the number of victims.



Some of the bodies were found frozen inside cars, and others were found on the ground.

Sophia Clay told the Buffalo News that her brother's body was found near a grocery store at 2 a.m. Saturday, but authorities were unable to reach her until 9 a.m. the next morning.

Some of the victims died from a medical event because the rescue services could not reach them in time.

One person died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a blocked furnace vent.



"We know there are people who have been stuck in their cars for more than two days," said Mark Polonkretz of Erie County.

"There are people in houses in freezing temperatures. Some of the victims, whose ages range from 26 to 93, were found in cars and some were frozen in the streets," he added.



Today, the city authorities turned to neighboring districts for help with food and other equipment, in light of the fact that residents have been barricaded in their homes for three days, and supplies are running out.

More than 29 thousand households in the district are without electricity, 20 thousand of them in Buffalo alone.

The damages to the electricity network were caused by falling trees, but some happened due to the freezing of parts of the network itself.

Looting also began tonight throughout Buffalo.

Police have confirmed at least two incidents of shoplifting.



New York Governor Kathy Hokul announced the dispatch of 200 additional National Guard soldiers to the city, in addition to the 50 soldiers sent on Saturday - who got stuck on the road due to the difficult conditions and needed rescue.

"This storm will be remembered as the most devastating in Buffalo, which has a long history of powerful storms," ​​Gov. Kathy Hokul said yesterday.

The storm is expected to begin weakening later this week.
