Brazilian police announced the discovery and deactivation of a series of explosive devices that were found on the outskirts of the capital, Brasilia, days before the inauguration ceremony of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as the country's new president.
Sputnik quoted police sources as saying: The operation was carried out the day after the arrest of a person who placed an explosive device near the airport of the Brazilian capital, before he admitted during his interrogation that his goal was to sow chaos to prevent the inauguration of the new president in early January.
The sources indicated that, following an anonymous call, explosives were discovered near the city of Gama, about 30 km from the center of Brasilia, where the demining team of the Special Operations Battalion disabled the devices at the scene using controlled explosions.
In turn, local media reported that the packages were about 40 kg of explosives, and the authorities also found several bulletproof vests at the scene.
The operation comes days after the arrest of a businessman who admitted to planting a bomb inside a kerosene tanker truck, which was defused by the authorities after the driver informed the police that there was a suspicious package in the truck.
The arrested businessman, who had weapons and explosives seized at his home, confessed that he made the explosive device and put it in the truck, in a move he "had planned with a group of far-right extremists."
President-elect Lula da Silva will take office next Sunday in a huge event attended by no fewer than 17 heads of state and government.
