Corona in China: "Many colleagues work even though they are ill"

Zhou Ying, senior nurse: »All the patients who come here have an oxygen content of only 50 to 70 percent.

When it comes to serious cases, we are under a lot of pressure.

Our medical staff have also fallen ill one after the other.

And many colleagues are still working although they are ill.«

Retired medical professionals in rural communities would also be reinstated, state media said.

Everywhere the health system is under great pressure.

Because after the sudden departure from its restrictive zero-Covid policy, China is faced with a violent wave of infections.

Most patients are elderly.

Beijing's municipal government has increased the number of fever clinics in the city from 94 to nearly 1,300, state media report.

Wang Dawei, Deputy Chief Physician Tongren Hospital: Our entire internal medicine department now supports the emergency and fever departments.

Originally we had more than 160 admissions to the internal medicine emergency room every day, now there are already over 330.«

International health experts estimate the number of daily infections at millions, and the number of infections could rise further.

The Beijing Health Commission announced on Monday that the danger level of the corona virus would be lowered from January 8th.

This is associated with relaxation of quarantine and travel restrictions.
