Hundreds were stuck in their vehicles for two days in the middle of a snowstorm in New York • The President of the United States approved a budget for a special state of emergency in the country • Extreme cold conditions were recorded from Mexico to Canada

The freezing weather in the state of New York in the United States resulted in the death of 28 people near the city of Buffalo, some of whom got stuck in their vehicles under tens of centimeters of snow and suffered cardiac arrest or froze to death.

More than 60 people have died across the United States as a result of the extreme weather since the "Cyclone Bomb" began, but the Buffalo city area saw particularly extreme conditions that resulted in many deaths and injuries on roads outside the city.

The rescue forces and the National Guard carried out rescue operations of citizens who were stuck with their vehicles on the roads around the city, but in many cases they arrived too late.

"Everything looks like a war zone with vehicles lying on the side of the road with injured or dead people inside," said Buffalo-born New York State Governor Kathy Hokul.

Senior officials in the New York state rescue system told the media in the country that the members of the rescue forces are moving from vehicle to vehicle, while searching for bodies and victims in the snow.

Mark Poloncarez, director of the rescue department of Erie County, where the city of Buffalo is located, said that many citizens suffered cardiac arrest while trying to clear snow from the driveway of their home.

The authorities contacted the citizens of the country in order to make it clear to them that physical work in the extreme cold can cause a heart attack within minutes and that if possible it is better to avoid such work.

Noa, an Israeli who lives in New York City, tells about the cold wave: "I walked for less than twenty minutes, the wind almost blew me away and it felt like sword stabs on my face, which were the only bare part of my entire body. I wore three sweaters, four shirts, two pairs of pants, a coat Big, a scarf and a hat and I still felt completely frozen within minutes. Despite the difficult conditions, life in the city somehow goes on and people try to maintain as much as possible a routine."

United States President Joe Biden approved a special emergency budget for the state of New York after a state of emergency was declared in the state due to the blizzard and extreme cold conditions.

"My heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones this holiday season," the president wrote in a message from the White House.
