A prolonged winter storm that has swept across the United States over the past week has brought heavy snow and blizzards to several parts of the country, while a large arctic gust has brought temperatures to dangerous levels in much of the country.
More than half of the US population spent Christmas weekend under low wind chill advisories.
Brutal winter conditions buried communities under snow, knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of homes, closed highways, hampered holiday travel, forced hundreds of rescues and led to emergency declarations.
As it moved over the Great Lakes, the storm became a bomb cyclone that led to warnings for blizzards and winter weather conditions, as well as snow storms.
In New York state specifically, heavy snow fell, stranding even emergency vehicles and causing widespread power outages.
Here are some of the places that received the highest amounts of snow from the winter storm.

Buffalo
: 125 cm in three days
The city located in western New York state received a grand total of 142 cm of snow this month.
The last time Buffalo faced this much snow in a month's time was December 2001, when 210cm fell.
Watertown
: 105 cm in three days
Another city in upstate New York, Watertown, was hit by lake-effect snow bands that created dangerous blizzard conditions.
Copenhagen
: 76 cm in three days
Near Watertown, Copenhagen, a town in Lewis County, was covered in snow.
Driving conditions were so difficult that even snowplows had a hard time getting through the streets, CNN affiliate WWNY reported.
Sault Ste. Marie
: 28 cm in one day
The Michigan area set a record for daily snowfall on Sunday, when 11 inches were recorded.
This figure broke the previous record of 20 cm dating from December 25, 1992.
Grand Rapids
: 27 cm in one day.
A record 11 inches of snow fell in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Sunday, breaking the previous record of 7.5 inches from 1993.
