It was a severe blow for Murnau as a business location: the Hummelsheim company closed down 20 years ago.

The children's and youth clothing manufacturer was insolvent.

The company was an institution in Murnau.

It produced high quality goods.

Murnau

– Christa Mayrhans still has an anorak made by Hummelsheim.

"It's still being worn," says the Aidlingerin.

From 1981 to 1984, the 56-year-old trained as an industrial seamstress at the Murnau children's and youth clothing manufacturer.

After completing her apprenticeship, she worked there until the 1990s.

As line manager, Mayrhans was in charge of one of the assembly lines, on which 12 to 14 employees worked.

She had to make sure it worked.

Every evening she had to deliver a daily report.

Born in Eberfingerin, the profession of tailor has always interested her.

Why?

"Because it's such a creative profession."

Hummelsheim-Aus: Around 120 employees are on the street

At the end of 2002, exactly 20 years ago, the lights went out near Hummelsheim, located between the Untermarkt and the relief road.

The traditional company, an institution in the market town, was insolvent.

Around 120 employees were on the streets at the time.

The beginning of the end of the company had already become apparent in 2000.

At that time, the sales development of the children's and youth textile manufacturer began to unsettle the banks.

As the insolvency administrator announced at the time, the insolvency was triggered by losses of EUR 750,000 in 2000.

In the following year, "Miese" accumulated in the amount of 1.2 million euros.

A deficit of 650,000 euros was then predicted for 2002.

The money supply was finally turned off at the end of April 2002. Two months later, the then managing director filed for insolvency.

The procedure was opened on September 1, 2002.

The Hummelsheim company had been based in Murnau since 1935

The Hummelsheim company was originally founded to manufacture stage equipment.

It had been based in Murnau since 1935.

Hanns Richard Hummelsheim's father had previously spent vacations in the market town.

He liked it so much that he decided to set foot at the foot of the Alps.

The father also said "that the climate in Murnau is better," Hanns R. Hummelsheim once said in an interview.

The owner and senior boss of Hummelsheim GmbH & Co KG died in 1999 shortly before he was 83 years old.

He was considered to be the soul and heart of the family business to the very end.

It all started with a small business in Murnau.

In the 1960s there were six branches.

The "Hummel brand" was a byword for solid quality when it came to women's and especially children's clothing.

The company was repeatedly given the opportunity to outfit German Olympic and national ski teams.

Hummelsheim: Concentration on clothing for the next generation

When the company celebrated its 75th anniversary and 50th anniversary of its headquarters in Murnau in 1985, however, sportswear had already been given up.

The range now ranges from clothing for babies and clothes for children and young people to maternity wear.

The output was considerable: more than 1.2 million parts were produced per year.

A third of these were created in Murnau and in German branch companies, the rest abroad.

In the end, "however, all the parts came together again in Murnau in order to undergo the strict, professional final inspection here," reads the chronicle of the Murnau market.

In 2004, Kulturbang was celebrated on the company premises

After the bankruptcy, the buildings were leveled to the ground.

2004 was celebrated on the site.

The "Cultural Bang" festival of the association "Menschen Helfen" took place on the former company premises.

A good amount of sand was piled up for the beach party.

The Tengelmann Center was later built on the site.

In the years after the insolvency, Hummelsheim goods continued to be very popular.

At children's clothing bazaars, the parents almost tore the pieces.

Various jackets, sweaters and quilted waistcoats from Hummelsheim will also be for sale on Ebay in December 2022.

Former Hummelsheim employee has many positive memories

Christa Mayrhans only has positive memories of her time at Hummelsheim.

"It was nice working in the company," she sums up, "a nice time." On the street, the Aidlingerin, who has now been working at Raum & Gestaltung Probst in Untermarkt for 15 years, occasionally bumps into former colleagues.
