Tired of standing on the train to get home?

This sad reality is well known to elected officials in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, who voted on December 15 and 16 in favor of the acquisition of 15 new trains.

The TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine has experienced significant growth in its traffic for many years

”, explains the region, admitting that “

the current fleet is no longer sufficient to provide quality service on a daily basis

”.

With more than 700 circulations and 66,000 daily trips spread over more than 3,400 kilometers of lines and 320 stopping points, the 195 current TER trains will not be enough to ensure a quality service and respond to the increase in traffic in the near future. two to three years

”, acknowledges the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.

A study has therefore assessed the short-term need (2025) at 15 new trains.

By 2026, they will run on regional lines and the metropolitan RER, allowing "

to offer 3,612 additional seats

".

These acquisitions “

represent an amount of 160.3 million euros, spread over 5 years

”, half financed by Bordeaux Métropole.

As for it, "

the Region will own the trains as soon as they are delivered

", specifies Renaud Lagrave, vice-president of the Regional Council in charge of mobility.

23% more traffic between 2016 and 2019

This acquisition will be shared between 11 Régiolis trains and 4 Régio2N trains.

Purchases presented as allowing "

to meet the needs of users and the operating constraints of the park in the years to come

".

Indeed, "

with emissions of greenhouse gases and particles much lower than road mode, rail transport is environmentally friendly

", underlines the region, recalling that "

the Régio2N trains are 100% electric and the Régiolis are electric-thermal dual-mode

”.

The region also explains that the activity of TER "

has experienced continuous growth in its attendance for ten years, with an increase of 11% between 2013 and 2019 and in particular, a growth peak of more than 23% between 2016 and 2019

”.

Stressing that this mode of transport can be "

economical, ecological and comfortable

", the region recognizes that since the start of the 2022 school year, "

many trains are overloaded

", especially during rush hour.
