Type 2 diabetes is one of the common diseases that many people can get under control with lifestyle changes.

According to researchers, intermittent fasting is effective.

Eat what you feel like eating for eight hours and fast for 16 hours: this is the principle behind the most popular form of intermittent fasting.

This should not only make kilos disappear: the risk of heart attack also decreases as a result of the diet, as a study at the University of Halle shows.

"Intermittent fasting triggers changes in cell metabolism, which in turn show many similarities with the very cell programs that promote healing of the heart muscle and restoration of blood flow and the pumping function of the heart," says Professor Daniel Sedding, Director of the University Clinic for Cardiology in Halle (Saale ).

This finding could also make intermittent fasting useful for heart attack survivors, as the study authors explain.

In addition to heart health, glucose metabolism also benefits from intermittent fasting, as Chinese scientists have discovered.

With intermittent fasting against diabetes: No more medication after three months

The astonishing results of the team led by Dongbo Liu from the Clinical Research Center at the State Key Laboratory of Subhealth Intervention Technology in Changsha, China: After a three-month intermittent fasting cycle, many of the study participants with type 2 diabetes had either been able to reduce the dose of their medication or they were able to drop completely.

For their study, which was published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, the researchers examined data from 72 type 2 diabetics.

36 of them were in the intermittent fasting group, the remaining subjects served as the control group.

For three months, the first group followed the dietary rules of the so-called Chinese medical nutrition therapy (CMNT) from traditional Chinese medicine.

This can be viewed as a form of intermittent fasting.

Certain foods are excluded, for example highly processed products.

On the other hand, healthy foods such as whole grain products, vegetables and fruit are permitted.

The three-month intermittent fasting regimen comprised six cycles of 15 days each: on the first five days, the subjects were only allowed to eat 840 calories a day, and on the remaining ten days they adhered to the dietary guidelines for diabetes in China.

The results showed a positive effect of the fasting regimen: "After completing the three-month intervention and three-month follow-up, 47.2% of participants in the CMNT group achieved diabetes remission, while only 2.8% of those in the control group achieved remission," the researchers write in their study.

In addition, after 12 months of follow-up, the drug costs of the CMNT group were 77.22 percent lower than those of the control group.

Remission describes the easing of symptoms of the disease.

The weight of the fasting cure participants was reduced by almost six kilograms on average, that of the control group study participants by only 0.27 kilograms on average.

Intermittent fasting also had a positive effect on blood glucose levels: "After 12 months of follow-up, 44.4% of participants achieved sustained remission with an HbA1c level of 6.33%," according to the study leaders.

Their conclusion: "This study demonstrates the clinical efficacy of CMNT in achieving diabetes remission for at least 1 year."
