Be it in Greising, on the Geisskopf, in Waldmünchen or on the Hohenbogenbahn - the prospect for winter sports enthusiasts is currently depressing.

Spring-like weather melts all the snow in the Bavarian Forest and spoils the start of the season for winter sports enthusiasts and ski lift operators.

Munich – While the United States is battling an extreme cold spell with temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees, spring-like weather has set in over here.

Since Christmas Eve, temperatures have been in the two-digit plus range and are causing Bavarian winter sports enthusiasts and ski lift operators to sweat.

In the Bavarian Forest, the latter draw the logical conclusion and - with a few exceptions - close their facilities shortly after the start of the season.

Bavarian Forest: Small opening planned despite total failure in previous ski season

At almost 1500 meters in altitude, the region around the

Großer Arber

is one of the highest ski areas in the Bavarian Forest.

Only a few kilometers from the German-Czech border, winter sports enthusiasts will actually find twelve kilometers of pistes for leisurely cruising or a fast descent.

But a look at the snow situation opens up a depressing prospect: instead of a layer of snow, greyish, brown soil dominates the area around the valley station.

Only one of seven ski lifts and mountain railways is in operation - exclusively for pedestrians from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. - while all slopes are closed waiting for a quick miracle of snow.

Likewise the toboggan runs and the gastronomy.

The operators plan on December 28 with a small opening of four departures.

Continuous rain and high temperatures on the "Glacier of the Bavarian Forest"

"Slope condition: not ideal" Also the ski area around

Mitterdorf (Almberg)/Mitterfirmiansreut

in Lower Bavaria

waiting for fresh snow.

"Due to the continuous rain of the last few days and the continued warm temperatures, all facilities are closed until further notice," says the website of the ski center there.

On the "Glacier of the Bavarian Forest" it is slightly below zero, but there is no snow cover in sight that is suitable for skiing.

The operators still have a few days until the end of the season in mid-March.

However, it is still uncertain when they will be able to open their facilities again.

In the area around the Lower Bavarian

municipality of Sankt Englmar

, the lifts in the

Proeller ski triangle

and on the

Predigtstuhl

are also closed.

The last time it snowed there was mid-December.

The warm weather gave the ski area the rest: total failure.

None of the eleven kilometers

are ready to drive.

Sometimes the temperatures are almost ten degrees.

One route is now open again.

Young and old can go down the toboggan run in the Kurpark between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

"Now it makes no sense" - only one cable car open

In

Greising

, just under ten kilometers from Deggendorf, there has been a ski lift for 56 years.

Generations of winter sports enthusiasts have covered their first kilometers of slopes there.

But as can be seen on the current webcam recordings, there is no snow here either.

The Christmas thaw threw a spanner in the works for the operators.

The descents at the

Waldmünchner Althütte

are only speckled with remnants of the past winter weather.

"We had five very good days of skiing," says the managing director of the

Hohenbogenbahn,

Markus Müller, to the Bavarian radio station.

"Now it doesn't make any sense anymore," he adds, looking at the current temperatures.

At least pedestrians can use the chairlift daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and enjoy the almost snow-free landscape near Neukirchen am Heiligen Blut.

The snow conditions are similar at the Höllkreuz

ski lift

, five kilometers from the village.

Too little snow for snow cannons - opening not in sight

The more than 1000 meter high

Geisskopf

also suffers from the warm weather.

Nine pistes with eight lifts would actually be ready for skiers and snowboarders - if there was snow to ski on.

A start to the winter sports season is also not in sight here.

A winter hiking trail is available as an alternative.

The current snow situation is so disastrous that not even snow cannons help.

Some climate activists will probably be happy about that.

Artificial snow is controversial because of its energy consumption.

But there are also advocates.

At the beginning of December, the Bavarian Economics Minister Hubert Aiwanger (free voters) took a position and defended the use of the snow cannons.

"No, people must also be allowed to relax outside," the politician replied to the criticism of the high energy consumption.
