Air travelers in the United States hoping for clear skies Tuesday after a disastrous week of weather-related flight cancellations and delays will have to extend their patience a few more days, especially if they're flying Southwest Airlines.

Southwest warns that this week's cancellations and delays are expected to continue for several more days, and its representatives say the Dallas-based airline is planning to reduce its flight schedule to get operations back on track.

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan told The Wall Street Journal that the company plans to operate just over a third of its schedule in the coming days to give crews a chance to get into proper positions.

"This is the largest scale event I've ever seen," Jordan said in an interview Monday night with WSJ.com.

The storm hit two of its biggest hubs - Chicago and Denver - at a time when Covid-19 and other winter conditions were depleting staff.

Southwest's ambitious agenda and underinvestment were also blamed.

The winter storm that swept across the country was an inconvenience for travelers, who had begun to push Christmas week flight numbers back toward pre-pandemic levels.

A dangerous and prolonged winter storm that swept across the country last week brought heavy snow and blizzards to parts of the US, while a huge arctic gust plunged temperatures to dangerous levels across much of the country.

As it moved over the Great Lakes, the storm became a "bomb cyclone," triggering blizzard and winter weather warnings along with white snow conditions.

In New York state, in particular, heavy snow fell, stranding even emergency vehicles and causing widespread power outages.

Here are some of the places that received the highest snow totals from this winter storm:

  • Buffalo: 125 centimeters in three days - Western New York City received a whopping 141 centimeters of snow this month.

The last time Buffalo received this much snow in a monthly period was in December 2001, with 210 centimeters.

  • Watertown: 104 centimeters in three days - Another New York City, Watertown, was pummeled with snow as bands of lake effects moved through the area, causing dangerous blizzard conditions.

  • Copenhagen: 30 inches in three days - Near Watertown, Copenhagen, a town in Lewis County, New York, was engulfed in snow.

  • Sault Ste. Marie: 11 inches in one day - The Michigan area broke the record for maximum daily snowfall with 11 inches of snow on Sunday.

This beats the old record of 20 centimeters received on December 25, 1992.

  • Grand Rapids: 27 centimeters in one day - A record snowfall fell in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Saturday, surpassing the previous record of 19 centimeters set in 1993.

Here's what you need to know to keep your family safe in winter weather conditions

By Jacqueline Howard

When winter storms force us to prepare for freezing rain, wind, sleet and snow, lives can be in danger.

Babies and the elderly are most at risk for cold-related illness or injury, as infants lose body heat more easily and the elderly tend to produce less body heat.

But there are steps you can take to protect yourself and others when extreme cold hits.

Here are some tips from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Weather Service.

If you are at home:

  • Make sure that babies under the age of 1 do not sleep in cold rooms and wear appropriate warm clothing such as footed pajamas, one-piece blankets or sleeping bags.

Remove any pillows or other soft bedding from the crib, as they pose a risk of suffocation or sudden infant death syndrome.

  • If you have friends or neighbors over the age of 65, check on them often to make sure their homes have adequate heating.

  • Leave water faucets slightly open to prevent frozen pipes.

  • Eat balanced meals to keep warm.

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can cause your body to lose heat more quickly.

If you are outdoors:

  • Bundle up with hats, scarves, and gloves, and layer your clothing.

  • Avoid walking on ice and getting wet.

  • If you have to shovel snow or do other outdoor work, take your time and work slowly.

If you have older neighbors, offer to help them shovel their driveways or driveways.

  • If possible, avoid driving on icy roads.

  • If you get stranded outside, it's safest to stay in your vehicle.

  • Try to keep pets indoors when it's cold, but if they do go outside, give them a good clean of snow from their paws and underbelly when they come back inside.

Never leave your dog unleashed on snow or ice.
