A fisherman missing in Brazil has been found more than 50 hours after he fell from the boat he was working on off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, the media in the South American country reported today (Wednesday).
David Suarez, 43, was rescued by a local fishing boat two days after he fell off a ship he was working on in the middle of the sea.
The boat he was working on was found empty by fishermen, which led to extensive searches for him.
He went alone to the heart of the sea on December 24 in order to fish and return the same day to his place of residence.
A Brazilian fisherman is rescued from a buoy in the middle of the sea after surviving there for two days
He fell off his boat a few hours after leaving and told a Madina news site that "I let the currents sweep me away in order not to lose energy. The hardest thing was giving up the chance to return to my boat, realizing that I would probably drown if I tried."
The fisherman took off his pants and shirt because he realized that they were weighing him down and would make it difficult for him to continue drifting, hoping that he would find some assistance.
Salvation came in the form of a large broadcast buoy.
"The water was rough and the sea was cold. I was very worried that I would freeze to death before any help arrived, so I climbed on the buoy with the aim of staying as dry as possible."
48 hours later the long-awaited rescue came after one of the fishermen noticed Suarez hanging on the buoy.
The man suffered from severe dehydration and an extremely low body weight.
In the video taken by his rescuers, he is seen smiling and joking, despite his difficult condition.
"I was very excited when they rescued me, the fishermen who found me also cried from excitement," said the fisherman.
